Sebastian Fundora is the new WBA and WBO super welterweight champion after defeating Tim Tszyu. This has now opened up an opportunity to fight either Errol Spence Jr. or Terence Crawford. In addition, Spence Jr. entered the ring after the fight, which was his first significant public appearance since losing to Crawford in July 2023.
The interviewer brought up how Spence Jr. had stated that he would like to fight the winner of the Tszyu vs. Fundora fight. ‘The Big Fish’ responded by stating that he intends to follow through with his words. Hence, in the post-fight press conference, Fundora was asked about who he would prefer to fight between Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford. The new welterweight champion responded by stating:
Whatever they give me. Errol Spence is a great opportunity. I think it’s a match made in heaven, but Terence Crawford is the best fighter in the world. I will like to fight him.Sebastian Fundora via ProBoxTv
Hence, Fundora believes that both adversaries would be beneficial to him and his career in the long run. This indicates that he wants to carefully consider his options before deciding on the fight, but he hinted that he would prefer to fight Crawford because he is regarded as a top pound-for-pound fighter. Subsequently, Crawford did not appreciate Spence Jr. calling out the new champion.
As such, Crawford fired back at Spence Jr. and told him to stay in line since The Big Fish lost against him. However, Spence Jr. responded to this by telling the champion that he doesn’t do lines which implies that he does not want to wait.
Tim Tszyu’s post-fight interview
For the first time in his career, Tszyu found himself on the losing side against Fundora, even though Tszyu got off to a great start, landing some thunderous shots that caught Fundora off-guard. Then, disaster struck in the penultimate round when Tszyu and Fundora collided, resulting in a nasty cut on Tszyu’s forehead that stopped him in his tracks and caused blood to gush down his face.
But like a true champion, he kept fighting until the final round. However, this was not enough since Fundora won via split decision. This decision was quite controversial since many believe that the fight should have been a no-contest because of Tszyu’s injury. However, he was not disheartened, and after the fight, he stated:
You win some, You lose some. It's how you bounce back. Appreciate all the love worldwideTim Tszyu via Sporting News Australia
Hence, Tszyu is not blaming his loss on his injury and is instead eager to return even stronger. As such, the Australian boxer will again be able to challenge Fundora for a title fight after securing a win against someone else. In the meantime, Fundora is expected to make one title defense against either Crawford or Errol Spence Jr.
