Shakur Stevenson, the WBC lightweight champion, is locked in a war of words on social media with boxing promoter Oscar De La Hoya. This feud is over a possible match-up between Stevenson and rising contender William Zepeda. Initially, Stevenson had abruptly announced his retirement from the sport. However, once he announced his return, De La Hoya publicly challenged Stevenson to fight Zepeda. Furthermore, this was after Zepeda defeated Maxi Hughes in March.

The matchup is great since both fighters are undefeated. Stevenson has a 21-0 record and Zepeda has a 30-0 record. Furthermore, Zepeda has won 26 fights via KO, while Stevenson has only won 10 fights via KO. At the same time, it should be noted that Stevenson has had nine title fights, while Zepeda has not fought one yet. Hence, after announcing his return in July, Stevenson grew eager to face him and stated:

Yooo @OscarDeLaHoya I still haven’t heard nothing yet about Zepeda fighting me July 6th

As such, Stevenson called out De La Hoya, who was the first person to bring up this matchup. In addition, Stevenson stated that he hadn’t heard anything from the promoter to make the fight a reality. The younger boxer also accused De La Hoya of using his name to promote his fighters.

In addition, Stevenson justified this claim since Oscar De La Hoya keeps bringing up his name but does not make the fights happen. De La Hoya responded to the tweet by stating that Zepeda will be fighting soon for the second time this year and would reach out to Stevenson’s promoter in the third quarter of 2024.

Bob Arum fires back at Oscar De La Hoya

Stevenson and his promoter, Bob Arum, did not appreciate De La Hoya’s actions on social media. As such, both Stevenson and Arum fired back at the promoter for using the fighter’s name. Furthermore, Top Rank’s CEO, Arum, even went to the extent of calling De La Hoya a hypocrite.

Arum also revealed that their team contacted Golden Boy Promotion’s team to initiate talks about the fight. This was after De La Hoya called out Stevenson. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to make a deal.

However, even though Stevenson and De La Hoya agreed to the fight on social media, the team stated that they were not ready. In addition, Arum believes that they will not be ready to fight Stevenson anytime soon. This is because the Top Rank CEO claims that fighting Stevenson is similar to a death sentence for Zepeda.
