Undisputed Women’s boxing champion Claressa Shields attended the ESPYS Awards recently, she was awarded best boxer of the Year. She won the award defeating fellow nominees Shakur Stevenson, Gervonta Davis, and Devin Haney. Shields is the only women boxer to win the award in history. After the award function, Shields gave an interview for ESN News.

She was asked to choose between her fellow nominees Stevenson and Haney. According to Shields, “As much love as I have for both of them, I don’t believe anyone can beat Shakur, not Devin, not Gervonta, not Ryan Garcia.” She also referred to Stevenson as “A male Claressa Shields” as she believes that he will reach her level.

Stevenson is a former champion in the featherweight division. He held the WBC and WBO featherweight titles after he was forced to vacate them. He missed weight in his fight against Robson Conceição in September 2022. Stevenson is also an Olympic silver medalist and has a gold medal in Youth Olympics. Stevenson also has an impressive professional boxing record of 20-0.

Shields won Olympic gold for the United States for the US women’s team whereas Shakur won silver in the bantamweight division. The “GWOAT” has an undefeated boxing record of 14-0 and is the only boxer to hold all four major belts. She has truly cemented her place in the history books with such a legendary career.

Claressa Shields demands equal pay

Shields has a legendary career behind her, and for sure will go down as one of the best boxers of this generation. She has earned millions of dollars from her professional bouts, she grew up poor and worked really hard. She is the first woman boxer to earn a seven-figure payout.

In an interview with Associated Media, Shields said “We don’t get the equal TV time, the equal promotion, equal pay. And that’s what I’ve been trying to do with my platform and make sure that I get all of that“. TV and streaming deals are 10-20 times more profitable for men than women.

Shields last won against Maricela Cornejo via unanimous decision. Women’s boxing also sells out big arenas such as the Amanda Serrano vs Katie Taylor fight at the Madison Square Garden.
