Simiso Buthelezi was just 24 years old when he was fighting for a continental title fight under the WBF (World Boxing Federation) banner against Siphesihle Mntungwa. The fight reached the 10th round when suddenly Buthelezi, with a 4-1 career in his overall boxing career, received a power jab whilst knocking his opponent down and suddenly started losing the control over the fight when a few seconds down the line Buthelezi looks at no one walking towards the corner and starts throwing punches as if an opponent is standing right there.

The fight was stopped by the referee as he saw that Buthelezi is not capable of fighting anymore and Mntungwa was declared the winner. But after that Buthelezi’s coach came out to give an update on the medical condition and seemed like the upcoming boxer conceived a blood clot in his brain due to a blow to his head. This was already tough for the family who saw Buthelezi get graduated just a couple of weeks before the fight and now the times are even hard as the biggest fear turned into reality.

Boxing’s sports journalist Michael Benson came out with a sad tweet that said “South African boxer Simiso Buthelezi has died in hospital after suffering a brain injury which caused him to throw punches at thin air during his fight (the video of which went viral) at the weekend.”

In the sport of boxing, there’s nothing worse than a boxer’s death only due to the love for the sport. Buthelezi was just a fighter in his early 20s who was yet to his potential peak or even see his overall life unfold in general which could’ve been much more fruitful than this path of his destiny. We sadly mourn the death of this young promising athlete today and may no one sees this day on their course of the love for the sport.
