Boxing coach Diego Arrua has unfortunately passed away after experiencing a deadly heart attack while observing the most significant fight of his wife’s career. Arrua was present in the corner for Sabrina Perez’s interim WBC featherweight title match against Australian boxer Skye Nicolson. This significant bout took place during Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing event in Tijuana, Mexico, on Friday night.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, the Argentine boxing coach suffered a devastating collapse between the 9th and 10th rounds of the match. This much-anticipated bout, which was a part of the televised event on DAZN, took place at the Auditorio Municipal Fausto Gutierrez.
Immediate medical assistance was administered, and Arrua was urgently transported to a nearby hospital. Tragically, despite the efforts of the medical team, he was pronounced deceased shortly after 9:30 p.m. local time. This unfortunate turn of events cast a somber atmosphere over the boxing event and left everyone in shock.
“It is with deep sadness that we have been informed of the sudden death of Argentine coach Diego [Arrua],” WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman revealed on social media Friday evening.
Nicolson went on to win the fight via unanimous decision; however, Perez was not in the ring when the decision was announced and the celebration was halted. The Nicolson team was more concerned about Perez and her family.

Before the championship bout, Skye Nicolson expressed her doubts and uncertainty in an interview, discussing how she had reservations about her choice to persist in the sport of boxing. Having clinched her first championship title, Skye Nicolson’s focus is bound to shift toward shedding her interim status and setting her sights on an eagerly anticipated clash with the legendary Amanda Serrano. However, the fighter was concerned about Sabira after the unfortunate event during the fight and expressed her prayers for her family.
“Today I’m leaving Tijuana with a heavy heart. All of my thoughts and prayers are with Sabrina Pérez and her family during this incredibly painful and horrible time. My heart is broken for this warrior and I can’t even imagine what she is going through.” The newly crowned interim champion wrote on X.
