Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou was promoted as the ‘Battle of the Baddest.’ It went down in Riyad, Saudi Arabia, on a grand scale. While the Saudis invested heavily in the event, the PPV buys shocked the internet. According to the American Journalist Dave Meltzer, the mega event only did around 67,000 Pay-per-view buys.
He mentioned that the event did only 11,500 cable buys and 56,000 streams on ESPN+. These numbers are really low in comparison with the fighters’ previous PPVs. For instance, Tyson Fury did around 600k to 800k buys for his previous fights with Deontay Wilder and Derek Chisora. On the other hand, Francis Ngannou had numbers ranging from 300k to 500k buys when he headlined the UFC events. Here is what Dave Meltzer said on Observer Radio:
I will have the exact numbers tomorrow, but they were terrible. Way below an AEW PPV. Possibly 10k for TV orders. I will have the streaming tomorrow. It was nothing close to Canelo or Diaz-Paul buys.Dave Meltzer (via Observer Radio)

He mentioned Canelo Alvarez and Nate Diaz-JakePaul events here for comparison. The PPV buys for Canelo’s last fight were estimated to be in the 650-700,000 range, while Diaz vs. Paul made an estimated 450,000. In comparison, Fury vs. Ngannou’s PPV numbers were low. The fans did not expect it since the event was bigger than usual.
Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou was a successful event in terms of showmanship, but it was a flop in the PPV numbers. Ngannou’s knockdown of Fury was the highlight of the show. This was the biggest MMA-Boxing crossover matchup, and its failure to make more buys on PPV was disappointing.

Fans condemn illegal streams as a reason for low PPV buys. Here are some interesting reactions from the fans:
There’s no question about Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou being the biggest stars of boxing and MMA in the heavyweight division. But, their failure to bring in a massive pay-per-view number has shocked the fans. Many believe that Illegal streams may be a reason why it had very low numbers. But, in the end, the event was a success as it was held on behalf of Saudi officials, and they weren’t concerned about how much it would make in terms of PPV profit.
