The welterweight bout between Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Fredrick Lawson came to a controversial end after a first-round stoppage. The fight was held at The Theater at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas on January 6, 2024, and Ortiz swiftly won. Subsequently, compared to the actual fight, a scuffle between Bernard Hopkins and Devin Haney‘s father Bill Haney came under the limelight.

In addition, the fight between Ortiz and Lawson abruptly ended after 2 minutes and 30 seconds of the first round. Ortiz was able to land a barrage of unanswered punches on Lawson, which caused the referee to controversially step in. Many people felt that it was an early stoppage, and in an interview with ES News, Hopkins shared his view.

Subsequently, Hopkins stated that Ortiz gave a dominant performance against Lawson, but the fight could have continued a bit more. The interviewer then asked Hopkins about his brief conversation with Devin Haney’s father, who was standing in the background. Hopkins stated:

Hopkins stated that he is more of a bathroom guy, implying that he likes to hash things out in private and potentially through a physical altercation. Haney then stepped in and began yelling, claiming that as a father, he would go anywhere to defend his son.

Both kept yelling towards the camera, and Haney maintained that he would do anything for his son, while Hopkins suggested they should step outside. Furthermore, matters escalated even more after Hopkins shoved Haney, which made security split them up.

Bill Haney throws shade at Ryan Garcia after canceling fight

While exiting the venue, Bill Haney threw shade at Hopkins by mentioning how Hopkins suggested they should go to the washroom. However, once Haney followed him, Hopkins resorted to shoving him and making a scene. Furthermore, Bill Haney also threw shade at Ryan Garcia after Garcia recently decided not to fight his son Devin.

The teams of both fighters were negotiating a super fight between them, which would have been their seventh fight. Haney and Garcia have fought each other as amateurs and have a 3-win, 3-loss score to settle. However, Garcia has stated that Rolando Romero is a bigger fight for him compared to Devin, and this hasn’t settled well with Haney.

Furthermore, Haney stated that Garcia is not a ‘La Raza’, which means to be part of the mixed indigenous and European heritage of Mexico.
