Mike Tyson has more than often expressed his history of drug use. However, ten years ago, he made a brutally honest admission and claimed he was dying.
Tyson’s professional boxing career spanned from 1985 to 2005, during which he had a number of pitfalls with drug abuse. His life turned around with an acting gig in the 2009 The Hangover movie. With the help of the cast and crew, he once again shot to glory and momentarily left his old ways behind. Surprisingly, he even owns a cannabis ranch of his own.
Speaking on the ESPN Friday Night Fights post-fight press conference in Verona, New York, Tyson talked about sobriety. He also said that he had longed to be forgiven for his vices. Speaking on the matter, he confessed:
I want to live my sober life. I don’t want to die. I’m on the verge of dying, because I’m a vicious alcoholic.
To achieve and uphold sobriety is a miracle in itself. For somebody as pronounced as Tyson, it is however tough. Tyson once stayed away from alcohol for six straight days. On the subject of relapsing, he added:
I haven’t drank or took drugs in six days, and for me that’s a miracle. I’ve been lying to everybody that thinks I was sober, but I’m not. This is my sixth day. I’m never going to use again.
The surprise confession came along when reporters asked about Tyson about Teddy Atlas. Atlas, Tyson’s former trainer, pulled a gun on him in 1983 for advances towards his niece. On hearing that Atlas was at the New York event as an ESPN analyst, he decided that it was time to make amends.

Ahead of the Francis Ngannou vs. Tyson Fury matchup, Mike Tyson shared a recent image of himself. Tyson recently participated in an open-session workout with Ngannou. “Iron Mike”, who represents Ngannou’s corner, went into a banter with the ‘other’ Tyson. This came in response to Fury and his father calling him out on the workout. Tyson replied that they should focus on the opponent and not him.
The boxing legend is still in tremendous shape. Incidentally. Tyson also returned to boxing when he fought Roy Jones Jr. in 2020. Moreover, Ngannou vs. Fury will be the first boxing event he will be part of since that fight. The photo Tyson shared on X has left fans spellbound.
The photo might suggest that Tyson still is in fighting shape, but there is no clarity on whether he will ever enter a ring again. However, the fans have speculated. Some have him facing off against influencer boxing brothers Jake Paul and Logan Paul. Others have him going up against Fury’s father, John Fury.
