The boxing world mourned the death of 18-year-old Mexican boxer Jeanette Zacarias Zapata. She died on Saturday, September 2, 2021, after sustaining a fatal blow during her bout against Marie Pier Houle. The 18-year-old was taken to the hospital after a left hook and a right hook knocked her unconscious in the ring. Furthermore, she was put into a medically induced coma after losing consciousness in the fight.
However, the boxer tragically passed away five days after the match. Her father revealed that this tragic outcome could have been avoided. Subsequently, Zapata’s father stated that she had received serious blows to the head in previous matches. Hence, boxers suggested she should not fight for her safety and well-being. Zapata’s father then revealed that she was ready to die in the fight, but she still wanted to fight.
In addition, her father recalled Zapata’s words in an interview and stated:
I chose this career, and if I die this way, boxing in this bout, then I’ll die.Jeanette Zacarias Zapata to her father
Zapata had suffered a brutal KO loss in Mexico in which she was knocked to the ground and fell to the canvas. Furthermore, she sustained injuries in that fight and was told to refrain from any boxing-related activities for two months.
However, Zapata would not let this stop her from fighting and was ready to bear the consequences, according to her father. Hence, in her final fight, she again sustained significant injuries, which caused her to lose her life tragically.
Jeanette Zacarias Zapata’s cause of death
The Quebec coroner recommends that a boxer or other fighter knocked out in a previous fight provide a detailed account of the event. It includes video footage and medical records. Subsequently, this must be done before they can compete in a boxing match or other fight between professional athletes.
This recommendation has arisen after Zapata’s tragic death inside the boxing ring. Furthermore, she died after suffering from second-impact syndrome. This refers to when somebody receives a second head injury before fully recovering from the initial one.
Zapata passed away because of craniocerebral trauma as a result of blows to the head. Hence, Zapata’s death could have been avoided if the authorities had known about her prior losses and injuries.
