Edwin Valero is one of the most controversial names in boxing. The Venezuelan boxer had a record of 27 wins and 0 losses. The boxing world knew Valero for his heavy hands and relentless fighting style. He accumulated a significant fan following through his fighting style that recorded 27 knockouts. However, with his success came a very dark tragedy that resulted in two deaths.

Edwin Valero was 24 when he became the WBA super featherweight champion. After three years of fighting through the ranks, he became the WBC lightweight champion. Valero wanted to move up divisions and fight the biggest names in boxing.

Edwin Valero rose to fame in boxing for his undefeated record and devastating knockout power. Reports suggest that he almost fought Manny Pacquiao in a blockbuster boxing clash. However, controversies outside of boxing devalued his success in the sport. Valero had alcohol and drug addictions that led to extreme paranoia. His wife, Jennifer Valero, accused him of domestic violence that arose from his addictions.

In 2010, Police arrested Valero for harassing his wife. He threatened the hospital staff for treating Viera’s punctured lung and broken ribs. The prosecutor motioned substantial prison time for Valero and a restraining order to protect his wife. The restraining order prevented him from going anywhere near his wife.

At this time, he entered rehabilitation, and medical experts diagnosed him as unstable and impulsive with moderate dependence on drugs. After six months of rehabilitation, Edwin Valero reunited with his wife.

While things started to get normal for the undefeated boxer, news of a dark incident emerged. The police found Jennifer’s dead body with three stab marks. Due to their abusive past, the police considered Valero, the prime suspect. The hotel security and police allege that Valero admitted the crime to them. Subsequently, Law Enforcement arrested Valero for further questioning and jailed him in Valencia City.

Edwin Valero had gained notoriety for his close friendship with Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez. Valero had a tattoo of President Chávez on his chest. After his arrest, the court ordered a compulsory six-month rehabilitation for Valero. However, the President helped Valero with the condition that he takes necessary treatment in Cuba.

The President of Venezuela wanted Valero to receive the appropriate care in Cuba. However, Valero crossed his friend and escaped on his way to Cuba for treatment. He reunited with his wife and checked in at Hotel Intercontinental. Worried about his safety, he asked security to sweep the room for audio bugs. The police found the dead body of Jennifer the next day. They arrived to question Valero about his whereabouts.

During the questioning, he allegedly admitted to killing his wife to the police and hotel security. They arrested him for further questioning and law enforcement procedures. He was placed in a cell on suicide watch. However, Valero reportedly hanged himself using his trousers and was found dead at 1:30 am on April 19, 2010.

Valero’s boxing promoter Bob Arum looked forward to a fight between Valero and Manny Pacquiao. He believed that with his skill and knockout power, he could have defeated big names like Canelo Alvarez, Floyd Mayweather, and Manny Pacquiao. A motion picture company made a biographical film titled ‘EL Inca’, which narrates the tragic events in the boxer’s life.
