“Willing to fight him”- Eddie Hearn reveals Deontay Wilder is on top of Anthony Joshua’s list if Oleksandr Usyk’s fight falls through
Deontay Wilder Anthony Joshua
Anthony Joshua’s promoter names Deontay Wilder as the fighter’s first choice to fight, if the fight with Oleksandr Usyk gets delayed.
AJ fought Usyk last year in September at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The fight didn’t go the way the Brit wanted it and he lost his WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles. After that, AJ has been eagerly waiting for his rematch against the Ukrainian.
But later it was found that Usyk will most probably fight Tyson Fury in his title unification bout. For that to happen, AJ was given a good amount of money to step down. Now with the severe condition regarding the dispute of Ukraine and Russia, Usyk went back to his country to provide his support. This left AJ hanging and in a need of new opponents to fight.
Eddie Hearn on Anthony Joshua’s next opponent
Hearn recently did an interview with iFL TV where he discussed Anthony Joshua’s fighting Deontay Wilder, upcoming PPV events, etc.
While talking about the potential Joshua vs Wilder fight, Hearn revealed that in AJs list of opponents he mentioned Wilder’s name. And he wanted Hearn to look into it. Hearn explained that AJ has always been planning to take on Wilder and was looking for opportunities.
According to Hearn, if AJ was given an option to choose who he wants to fight as Usyk is no longer available, he will name Wilder.
“That was the name that AJ put at the top of the list. You know, he sent me a list of five fighters that he would like me to explore, Deontay Wilder was one of them. He’s always wanted to fight him. I think if you said to AJ if you can’t fight Usyk and obviously Fury’s fighting, who would you most like to fight right now. I think he’d say, Deontay Wilder,” said Hearn.
Even if Joshua is considering fighting Wilder, there are very few chances of it happening now. Because there is no news regarding the status of Wilder. AJ wants to fight at the end of May or early June so if there will be no response from Wilder’s side then it will not materialize.
