Before there was Michael Jordan and 23XI Racing, connecting NASCAR and NBA, there was Brad Daugherty. He has been the co-owner of JTGD Racing, now rebranded as Hayk Motorsports, over two decades. Daugherty has been the backbone of the midfield team for years has have secured three Cup series wins with them.
The NBA Legend grew up in a racing family, with father and uncle being drag racers. He worse the No:43 Jersy while playing, to honor his childhood hero, seven times Cup champion Richard Petty. This fandom was the major reason behind him becoming a team owner, after he seriously got into NASCAR space over 30 years ago.
Yeah, my family has been around racing my whole life. My uncles, my father, everybody—they were drag racers. So, I grew up around race cars… So, the NASCAR space I’ve been around for about 30 years, and own a team for about 20-25 years.
Brad Daugherty said via SeeHendo on YouTube.
He played a significant role in getting Michael Jordan into the racing space, as the former teammates bonded over their love of hot rods. Daugherty feels he dragged Jordan, who was also a NASCAR fan growing up, to the sport.
So, it’s a lot of fun; I love hot rods, and I drag Michael into this space now, so he’s racing with us.
Brad Daugherty added.
Michael Jordan used to tease Brad Daugherty for being a race fan
Daugherty and Jordan used to play together for University of North Carolina, and during their time together the former often gave the latter a hard time while watching races, or being a hillbilly. But once the teasing was over, Jordan used to sit down with him to watch races.

Michael gave me a hard time, too, about being a hillbilly. But you know what? He would also sit there and watch with me. He liked it. He always did.
Brad Daugherty said.
The comments from Brad Daugherty shows a special bond he created with the Michael Jordan, over their shared love for racing. They now have an internal competition going on between them, with Jordan now on the lead, about who has the best team.
