The biggest topic of discussion in the NASCAR community at the moment, with just three more races left in the season, is still the credibility of the championship format. NASCAR has announced plans for a change from the 2026 season after industry wide demand to go back to full points championship. Now 2012 Cup series champion Brad Keselowski has shared his thoughts the controversial situation,

According to the RFK Racing owner driver, the whole drama has yet again proven why NASCAR as a sport has the most noticeable negative feedback loop. Brad Keselowski highlighted that it is part of the NASCAR culture, as changes only happens in the sport when complaints come from all aspects of the industry.

The sport is really interesting with how it perceives itself. It’s one of the sports that has the most noticeable negative feedback loop. That said, it’s also a squeaky-wheel-gets-the-grease sport where if somebody’s not squeaking, things don’t ever change.

Brad Keselowski said via Jeff Gluck of The Athletic.

He then shifted his focus to the need for the introduction of the 36-race format. The veteran asserted that the reason behind the intensified calls for change comes from the fact that the majority of the stock car racing community/industry has realized going back to the legacy format is the right way forward.

The 36 format has had such a loud drum beat as of late because I think most of the industry is realizing it’s probably the best for the sport…There’s a number of reasons for that, but [it’s] also because the sport has kind of revealed itself to be heavily influenced by its own spin, so to speak.

Brad Keselowski added.

The veteran believes the community is going raise their voices more and more, till NASCAR finally scrap the playoffs format. He asserted that the future of the sport is at the hands of the France family, that build NASCAR almost a century ago and owns majority shares of it, giving them the right to make decisions that they seem fit.

So, I suspect that drum beat will get just louder from more and more voices. Ultimately, I do think that the 36-race season format is what’s best for the sport. It’s not my decision. It’ll come down to the France family making that decision, and I respect that. They own the sport, and they have every right to make that decision.

Brad Keselowski asserted.

Brad Keselowski explains what NASCAR needs to do to endure for generations

Further talking about the point, the RFK veteran asserted that the format change caused a major change in how each race are perceived in the sport. In the past races connected championships, but now championship connects races.

Every single race had its own significance before the format was changed, now the regular season and playoffs differ in relevance as well as significance. Keselowski believes going back to the legacy format will help to make evert race a big event as they should.

We need 38 big events. That’s what this sport needs to endure for generations to come, and the best opportunity for that is in a season-long format that is a series of races connected by a championship, rather than a championship connected by a series of races.

The comments from the RFK Racing driver seems rational and something that the majority of the racing community agrees with. It would be interesting to see how NASCAR going to respond to the pints put forward by the champion driver.
