The ending of the 2024 NASCAR Cup season has stirred up controversies and heated arguments about the playoff format yet again. Joey Logano of Team Penske Racing won the championship, despite having a tough regular season, by peaking at the right to win races over the racers like Kyle Larson and Cristopher Bell, who were consistent the whole season.
One of the major criticisms of the playoff format over the years has been the fact that it often favors one of wins more over consistency shown the whole season. Now RFK Racing owner driver and 2012 Cup champion Brad Keselowski, has shared his verdict on the demands from the racing community to change the format.
He pointed out that the format should be reflected more on race wins, with the final race being the tiebreaker. Keselowski pointed out that he has been a hard time as a competitor, as well as racing fan, seeing the winningest drivers of the season routinely failing to win the title, and admitted it feels wrong.
Denny Hamlin sends a message to NASCAR on demands to change playoffs
A similar feeling was shared by the three times Daytona 500 champion Denny Hamlin. He recently pointed out that he needs NASCAR to make regular season more worthwhile and asserted that some tweaks are needed to make the playoff
Many in the NASCAR community including the drivers and team owners have been calling for the same tweaks as Hamlin suggested. It would be interesting to see if the sanctioning body would make such changes in the near future.
