In Short
  • Brady Tkachuk criticized the White House for an AI-generated video depicting him insulting Canadians.
  • He clarified that the video is fake and does not represent his views or voice.
  • Tkachuk has been the Ottawa Senators captain since 2018, leading the team back to the playoffs after seven years.

The Ottawa Senators captain, Brady Tkachuk, slammed the White House after the backlash following the recently released AI-generated video of him insulting a Canadian. In the video, the 26-year-old was heard stating that he needed to teach the “maple syrup eating f***s,” a lesson for booing their national anthem, with the expletive bleeped out.

The video, despite carrying the AI-generated label, did send a message to his fans across the border. There’s a charged sporting rivalry between the USA and Canada amid the two countries’ geopolitical distancing, and the video pushed the boundaries of a sporting rivalry into a more pronounced anger against an opponent.

Here’s the video that was released by the White House:

Tkachuk has addressed the video, calling it clearly fake and carrying the words he would never say.

It’s clearly fake because it’s not my voice and not my lips moving. I’m not in control of any of those accounts. … I know that those words would never come out of my mouth.

The Arizona-born also addressed the close the northern border comment heard in the controversial call from the US president Donald Trump following the men’s team’s win against Canada in the gold medal game. He admitted that he was perplexed about how the words were attributed to him while acknowledging his career trajectory in Ottawa.

I’ve been seeing stuff that people think it’s me, but if you watch the video, that’s not my voice and something that I never say. I don’t really know how that kind of took a storm on its own when I play here and give everything I have here.

Tkachuk, 26, has been a part of the Ottawa Senators since they picked him fourth overall in 2018. It was under his captaincy that the Sens returned to the playoffs after seven years in 2024-25 seasons.

Ottawa Senators return to action with a disappointing loss to the Detroit Red Wings

The Ottawa Senators, looking to make back-to-back playoffs, had a setback, returning to the rink two weeks after the Olympic break. The Senators, playing the Detroit Red Wings at home, suffered a defeat at the hands of their division rivals.

Brady Tkachuk scored the goal in the first period, assisted by Jake Sanderson and Tim Stützle. Dylan Larkin, who was part of the Milano Cortina team, shone in his first match back, equalizing the Sens in the second period. The second period also saw some gloveless action when Simon Edvinsson was given a minor penalty for interference after stepping into Tkachuk, whose stick rode up and struck him in the face.

The Sens captain went down to the ice, after which Dylan Cozens and Edvinsson dropped the gloves, earning fighting majors apiece.

Before play resumed, Tkachuk skated over to the penalty box to confront Edvinsson and was handed a 10-minute misconduct for the exchange.

After a goalless third period, the game went into overtime, where Dylan Larkin beat Shane Pinto for the puck on a pass from Lucas Raymond and shot a backhander past Linus Ullmark to fetch the Wings’ crucial points. It was the thirteenth time Larkin has scored the game-winning goal in overtime, surpassing the franchise record set by Sergei Fedorov.

Larkin has been at the receiving end of a lot of backlash following the controversial celebrations following their Winter Olympics win. He was seen partying and capturing videos with the FBI Director, Kash Patel. Patel’s presence in the locker room, co-opting the moment of the men, was widely criticized by the media, former FBI officials, and fans of the game.
