At Crown Jewel, Cody Rhodes will square off against Gunther for the first time ever. Ahead of their marquee battle, both men came face-to-face on the latest episode of SmackDown. As expected, Gunther tried to get personal with Rhodes. By doing so, The Ring General mentioned his counterpart’s daughter during his promo. And it didn’t take long for Cody’s wife, Brandi Rhodes, to take issue with it.
Rhodes claimed on X that she was caught by surprise when their daughter, Liberty, was brought up. Moreover, the former AEW star hilariously said that she stops listening whenever Gunther talks. This isn’t the first time that Brandi has reacted to her husband’s ongoing storylines. On the road to WrestleMania, Brandi Rhodes would take shots at Cody’s rivals on social media.
Speaking of the segment, things got tense between the Undisputed WWE Champion and the World Heavyweight Champion. The latter accused Rhodes of dragging his family’s name into everything he did. Meanwhile, The American Nightmare questioned Gunther’s ‘Ring General’ moniker by asking who he actually commanded.

Shortly after, a brawl ensued with Cody Rhodes gaining the upper hand on his Crown Jewel opponent. However, it didn’t take long for Ludwig Kaiser to come to the aid of his Imperium teammate. Randy Orton then arrived to even the odds and save his friend. As a result of this mayhem, the former Legacy teammates will team up to face Gunther and Kaiser on next week’s episode of SmackDown.
Cody Rhodes and Gunther’s opponents for Saturday Night’s Main Event reportedly revealed
Following their Crown Jewel Championship match on Saturday, both Cody Rhodes and Gunther are expected to shift focus to defending their own titles. The Austrian wrestler will most likely face CM Punk at Survivor Series. However, his opponent for Saturday Night’s Main Event has seemingly been confirmed.
As per the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Gunther is planned to take on Damian Priest at the December PLE. Since his win over Finn Balor at Bad Blood, Priest has set his sights on reclaiming the World Heavyweight Title. On this week’s Raw episode, Priest and Gunther came face-to-face during a backstage segment, hinting at a SummerSlam rematch.

Meanwhile, plans for Rhodes are to face Kevin Owens. The latter turned on The American Nightmare following Bad Blood. Due to his upcoming Crown Jewel bout, Rhodes hasn’t yet addressed the former Universal Champion’s actions. Interestingly, there is no information about his status for Survivor Series. As such, only time will tell what transpires for Rhodes in the coming months.
