Did Brandon Aiyuk really request a trade from the San Francisco 49ers? Well, his agent says otherwise.
Ever since the Super Bowl LVIII, there has been a boatload of speculations surrounding the future of star wide receiver Aiyuk. As he also addressed them saying he isn’t pleased with his role in the Niners offense and his contract situation, hinting he’s looking for other possibilities to be the No. 1 receiver.
However, the 49ers have been adamant about keeping the elite route runner. Given, that he has entered the fifth year of his rookie contract, the franchise is willing to offer him an extension, satisfactory to both the parties involved.
Interestingly, on Saturday morning a sketchy rumor surfaced on the internet suggesting that Aiyuk has requested a trade from the Niners ahead of the 2024 NFL draft, via a source close to NFL insider John Frascella. The rumor also hinted at a ‘mystery third team’ interested in Aiyuk, besides the Niners and the Baltimore Ravens.
However, as soon as the story hit the headlines, Aiyuk’s agent Ryan Williams confuted the trade rumors by reposting Frascella’s tweet, writing, “You need better sources.”
It’s no secret that the other NFL teams are interested in Aiyuk, and of course, the Niners wouldn’t want to lose such a solid offensive weapon. That’s why, they have put their foot down for all the trade rumors and strongly expressed their plan to keep Aiyuk.
Brandon Aiyuk’s quest for a fair extension with the 49ers
Even the 49ers have shown their commitment to offer Aiyuk an extension before the next season begins, his recent social media activity says otherwise. It appears Aiyuk is still not satisfied with his team.
He reportedly unfollowed his franchise on social media, as reported by Daily Mail via a screenshot of Aiyuk’s following list not having the name of the 49ers in it. He is set to earn $14.124 million in his fifth year as per his contract.
However, the Niners offered their No. 1 receiver Deebo Samuel a lucrative $71.5 million contract extension, with an annual salary of $23.85 million. Given, that Aiyuk is also looking for an extension similar to that number, if not more. That’s why it’s still a big question mark as to whether the Niners will be able to afford their top receivers with an average annual salary of almost $50 million.
