The San Francisco 49ers are looking to move on from their old guard in the offense and bring down the average age of their roster. Star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk could be among the players whom the 49ers may sacrifice in order to achieve their goal.
Aiyuk went through a similar spell this time last year. Following a 2023 season, which resulted in 75 catches for 1,342 yards, seven touchdowns, and an appearance in the Super Bowl, the former Arizona man pressured the Niners to make him the highest-earning receiver on the team. The 49ers eventually gave in to his demands and signed a $30 million-a-year lucrative deal.
The weeks following the deal didn’t go according to his plans. After just seven games, Aiyuk suffered a torn ACL and missed the entire year. The Niners finished last in their division, and as one of the first signs of a rebuild, they traded WR1 Deebo Samuel away to the Washington Commanders.
According to 49ers insider Michael Silver, they are open to trading Brandon Aiyuk as well. General Manager John Lynch lifted the curtain on any secret during the NFL Combine.
We need to get younger. I think we’re the oldest team in football after trying to make a run last year. I think it’s good to constantly get younger. Our draft class last year was a great move toward that. We’ll have four picks in the top 100. If the comp picks happen like we see it, we’ll have 10 picks overall. We’re excited about adding more youth to the great core of players we already have.

If you listen closely, he says:
‘I think there’s some good that could come out of it. We need to get younger…’

Aiyuk was a favorite to join the Commanders last year before his extension to play with former Arizona QB Jayden Daniels, but that route has closed shut after Samuel went that way.
New England Patriots are the front-runners for the Brandon Aiyuk trade
It’s never easy to find a home for a receiver who has the extra baggage of an inflated salary along with dead cap money. Fortunately, the recent increase in the salary cap may ease that situation. Teams such as the New England Patriots and Commanders benefitted from the increase the most.

The Patriots drafted their franchise quarterback in 2024 in Drake Maye and now want to make use of their money in the bank. One of the additions they could make is that of Brandon Aiyuk.
Per @PhilAPerry on @NBCSBoston's "Early Edition:" Brandon Aiyuk and Jakobi Meyers are two WRs the Patriots could target via trade.

The 26-year-old, on his day, is capable of putting up big numbers. However, whether he will still have the same amount of spunk in his veins after the big ACL injury remains a big mystery, which the Patriots need to think long and hard about.
