This week, the Minnesota Vikings reset the entire wide receiver market, when they signed their star wide receiver Justin Jefferson in a mammoth deal worth $140 million, which surpassed all previous deals and made him the highest-paid non-QB in the NFL.
However, Jefferson’s deal seems to have an adverse effect on Brandon Aiyuk’s situation, who is awaiting the long-term extension he deserves from the San Francisco 49ers after majorly contributing to their run for the Super Bowl. Throughout the offseason, the star wideout had repeatedly expressed his displeasure yet there is no ongoing contract talk.
This compelled Aiyuk to miss the 49ers’ offseason program, which didn’t concern the franchise much since it’s voluntary. However, seeing conference rival paying their receiver in such a generous way, Aiyuk is reportedly missing out on the mandatory training camp as well. With this bold move, the 49ers No. 2 wideout has become subject to a fine of $104,259 over the next three days.
The Niners are scheduled to organize two practices in these two days, where head coach Kyle Shanahan (today) and Defensive Coordinator Nick Sorensen (tomorrow) are to address the media about their practice sessions. However, it’s unlikely that the 49ers will fine Aiyuk since they haven’t been able to provide him with a deserving extension.
Meanwhile, they made star running back Christian McCaffrey the highest-paid RB in the league, even though he had two more seasons remaining in his previous contract. Aiyuk’s contract situation has become a crucial move expected out of the 49ers, otherwise the receiver might sit out the entire upcoming season.
49ers’ head coach Kyle Shanahan unshaken by Brandon Aiyuk’s holdout
When HC Shanahan was initially asked about Aiyuk’s contract situation after he missed the team’s OTAs, he didn’t seem too worried as this isn’t a tactic by players in their contract year. But seeing the receiver missing the mandatory training camp, Shanahan asserted that it doesn’t change anything in the team.
To me it doesn't change at all. You find out when guys are in those situations whether they come or not. Some guys come because they wanna avoid a fine and some don't, but regardless it doesn't change anything.Kyle Shanahan told the reporters
The 49ers head coach also said that it’s part of the business and everyone is well familiar with how this process takes place. Nonetheless, all eyes are on Aiyuk’s camp on what happens to this highly talked about deal.
