Hip-hop culture and NBA basketball have been in lockstep with each other for over three decades now. A rapper dropping an NBA player’s name in his songs is as common as a Venmo transaction these days. Superstar rappers like Drake and superstar hoopers like LeBron James, Steph Curry and Kevin Durant all hang out in the same circles off the court and share similar interests in investments, sports and more.
Drake and LeBron James have a friendship that goes way beyond just them being fans of one another. On many occasions, both of them have professed their love for what the other does on and off their fields. They have shared special occasions, celebrations, joys and family events with each other. Drake even got Bronny James on stage a few days after he staged a recovery from his cardiac arrest in the summer of 2023.
So when LeBron James became a vocal Kendrick Lamar aficionado in the aftermath of the Drake-Lamar beef in 2024, people expected the Toronto based popstar to take offense to the way James has gone out hard for the Compton-born rapper. On the other hand, Drake and Stephen Curry have remained tight, as have Drake and Kevin Durant. Curry even showed his displeasure when Not Like Us played at arenas in Team USA games.
Drake has since dissed LeBron James twice or more in leaked freestyles, his new single What Did I Miss? and more. His lyrics have caused uproar and a lot of discussion on the media, both sports media and on hip-hop forums. Gil’s Arena crew Gilbert Arenas and Brandon Jennings also had some things to say about the split, with Jennings batting for James and using incidents from Drake’s past to explain his stance:
They was celebrating, Drake and them was celebrating with KD and Steph when they was whooping their a** in the Finals. So what’s the difference? And that’s his biggest moment too. So how do you think he’s gonna feel? It’s petty, but I’m just saying, if I’m losing in the Finals, and these are my rivals, and y’all gonna be here ki-kiing and laughing and celebrating, which is fine too, but it’s like alright, whoa. It’s not even your time, the song just happened to be about you.

LeBron James is unfazed by Drake’s lyrics while on holiday with his wife Savannah
The line “I saw bro at the Pop Out with them but been d**k-riding gang since ‘Headlines’” on What Did I Miss? is a reference to LeBron’s appearance at Kendrick Lamar’s Juneteenth Pop Out concert in 2024, where he was seen enjoying Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us,” directed at Drake.

Drake also stoked tensions during his Wireless Festival performance in London on July 11-13, 2025. He altered lyrics in his 2018 song Nonstop to say, “How I go from 6 to 23, but not LeBron?”, which is another clear jab at LeBron, referencing their strained relationship. Drake also covered up a tattoo of LeBron’s high school jersey, replacing it with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
LeBron’s behavior in Cannes, where he and his wife Savannah were again spotted jamming out to Not Like Us, suggests that he is unfazed. The viral clips showed him and Savannah in high spirits, enjoying their vacation alongside figures like Maverick Carter and even Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez, who were also present at the party.
