Brazilian legend Romario, in a recent interview, claimed that the national team might not do well nor succeed in the upcoming World Cup, if they do not play Neymar Jr. The 58-year-old cast doubts about their chances, stating bluntly that they would ‘keep getting f*cked’.
The Selecao have fallen short of reclaiming their former glory, struggling to make it big at the recently concluded Copa America. Despite being five-time World Cup champions, the team’s dominance has significantly waned. Additionally, pundits and former players have criticized the team for leaving out their star player Neymar and a few other key players from recent squads. The 32-year-old has faced a career marred by injuries, affecting his ability to perform consistently.
Speaking at a 1994 WC anniversary event, Romario offered a critical take on the national team’s recent performances. He emphasized the importance of individual stars throughout history, mentioning Pele in 1970, himself in 1994, and Ronaldo in 2002. He suggested that Brazil must center their play around the ex-PSG star. Moreover, he concluded that the team will continue to under perform unless they acknowledge Neymar as a game-changer.

Neymar has scored 79 goals for the national team throughout his career, making him Brazil’s all-time leading scorer. Despite his achievements, the Al-Hilal star is yet to guide his team to major success, even though he has been part of their past World Cup squads.
Brazilian star Neymar Jr. yet to return from injury to play for Al-Hilal
Neymar Jr. has returned to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal to continue recovering from his left knee injury. The Brazilian star underwent surgery last November for an ACL injury sustained while playing for his national team against Uruguay.
The 32-year-old’s 2023-24 season was cut short by the injury, missing the Copa America. Though limited to just five matches, he still contributed a goal and two assists. Despite his absence, Al-Hilal won the Saudi league, Super Cup, and King’s Cup. Moreover, Al-Hilal manager Jorge Jesus assured fans of the player’s return in September.
His absence from the Brazilian national team affected their performance at the Copa America. Brazil was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Uruguay and struggled with leadership issues.
