A Brazilian Serie A match between Flamengo and Criciuma ended in controversy, due to a bizarre penalty decision by the referee in the final minutes of the game. The dispute erupted after a Criciuma player kicked a second ball that had entered the pitch during the game.

Flamengo forward Gabriel Barbosa struck the decisive 89th minute penalty helping his side defeat their opponents in the 18th round of the Brazilian Serie A. The score was level at 1-1 until the final moments of the match. Criciuma defender Rodrigo had opened the scoring in the 35th minute, but Flamengo forward Pedro equalized in the 75th minute. The win allowed Flamengo to maintain their 3rd position in the league table.

The winning goal for Flamengo came after a controversial penalty was awarded in the late minutes of the match. Flamengo forward Everton Soares was advancing with the ball when Criciuma defender Gustavo Barreto kicked a second ball onto the field, causing it to collide with the ball in play. The referee ruled this as a penalty, disappointing the Criciuma players. The referee also booked Barreto’s for deliberately kicking the extra ball.

Some experts suggested that the referee could have stopped the game if he thought the second ball was causing interference. The referee could have consulted VAR in that scenario. Criciuma manager Claudio Tencati also voiced his frustration with the decision.

Flamengo express interest in acquiring West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta on loan

Brazilian Serie A club Flamengo is eager to sign West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta, seeking to finalize an immediate deal. Recent media reports indicate that talks have been ongoing between the two clubs for over a month on a year-long loan agreement.

Flamengo believes that rejoining them might help reduce the impact of a possible Premier League punishment for the 26-year-old’s FA charges related to an alleged betting breach. The Brazilian star faces potential trouble, which could result in a playing ban. However, a return to Brazil could prove beneficial.

The former Lyon and AC Milan star might join Flamengo, where he spent much of his youth career. If he leaves, West Ham would need a replacement and are showing interest in N’Golo Kante and Reiss Nelson.
