Since the Tennessee Titans selected Cam Ward as their next franchise quarterback, head coach Brian Callahan and his staff were expected to help the young signal caller develop over the course of the season.

Ward did not have the kindest of words when asked to sum up how their season was going. They lost their fourth straight game of the season after failing to score a single point against the Houston Texans.

That game was the first when Callahan decided to hand over play-calling duties to quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree. In Week 5, they surprisingly won for the first time this season.

But it was not due to the capabilities of the Titans players or their coaches. Instead, their opponents, the Arizona Cardinals, seemingly handed the game to them on a silver platter, courtesy of a goal-line fumble, and unknowingly helped the Titans convert an interception into a touchdown.

Their struggles resurfaced in Week 6 as they suffered a disappointing loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. That game seemed to have summed up how badly the team had been playing.

I am incredibly discouraged by the outcome. We felt good coming into the game, and to not be able to perform well on offense, and not score points, and lose the game is disappointing. We all got to be better. Cam is part of that, too. Cam’s got to play better.

Brian Callahan said at the post-game press conference

This was Brian Callahan’s summary of how badly his team played against the Raiders. However, he reserved some individual criticism for his QB after Cam Ward threw another interception and fumbled the ball twice. Hours later, he was fired.

Fans lose their minds as Brian Callahan becomes 1st head coach to be fired in 2025

Football fans have had a fair idea of which head coaches were on the hot seat. Sure, Brian Callahan was working to keep his job, but no one expected the Tennessee Titans to fire him this early.

They released a statement stating that they wanted to be patient and strategic in building a successful football team. Fans believe that statement did not make sense.

Had they wanted to give it time to develop, Callahan could have molded Cam Ward the way he wanted. However, it seems the franchise preferred it if it were someone else who helped their QB develop, especially one who was not criticizing the rookie.

Instead of acknowledging the coaching staff’s mistake, fans believe Callahan’s criticism of Ward might have played a hand in his dismissal. Check out examples of those reactions below:

Fans also found this decision to part ways with Brian Callahan as an indictment of the top brass. They just let go of Mike Vrabel less than 2 years ago. Now, they have to go through the rigors of finding another capable team leader.

Cam Ward to work under Mike McCoy

After firing Brian Callahan, the Tennessee Titans promoted senior offensive assistant and former San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy to be their interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

This means that for the time being, Cam Ward will work with McCoy. He has previous experience coaching the Chargers and has experience almost entirely on the offensive side of the ball.

The Titans will next welcome back Mike Vrabel and his New England Patriots. From then on, the going gets tougher, as they will face playoff teams almost every other week.

If the franchise plans to hire someone else next season, they might use this time to scout potential candidates. Ward needs to develop quickly if the team is to return to playing competitive football anytime soon.
