On Wednesday, New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman had some interesting words. During a Zoom call, the 58-year-old defended his side as a “championship-caliber” team and claimed he was openly willing to challenge anyone regarding this.
The Bronx Bombers have had a slow offseason this year. After re-signing Trent Grisham through the qualifying offer, the team was super busy dealing with Cody Bellinger.
The Yankees had made Bellinger one of their biggest priorities this offseason. After several talks, they finally re-signed him last week. The two parties agreed to a 5-year, $162.5 million deal which will have opt-out clause after the 2nd and 3rd season.

The American League side has also retained the likes of Tim Hill, Ryan Yarbrough, Paul Blackburn and Amed Rosario amid other moves. Recently, they traded for pitcher Ryan Weathers after missing out on Miguel Cabrera.
However, the team has also lost some big names. Following a tough 2025 season in the Bronx, Devin Williams joined the New York Mets. Luke Weaver would later follow him and join the crosstown rivals of the Yankees on a 2-year deal.
While the team was happy to see Bellinger back, the fans were still not too pleased. Several users pointed out that the team was not a championship team still.
However, Cashman does not think that. In a Zoom meeting in Tampa, the Yankees GM would deny the narrative that the team was running the same roster back and expressed confidence in his club.
I disagree it’s the same team running it back… I’ve been openly willing to challenge anybody that we don’t have a championship-caliber roster and team.

Cashman would also point out about players returning from injuries. One of them will be team’s ace pitcher Gerrit Cole.
The 2023 Cy Young Award winner missed the entirety of last season due to Tommy John Surgery on his pitching elbow. He will likely return by May.
Along with him, Carlos Rodon is also expected to return at this time. These are some positive things for the team.
Fans slam Brian Cashman following his Yankees’ roster comments
Brian Cashman expressed confidence in his team on Wednesday and believes that the New York Yankees have what it takes to compete for the World Series title. His comment, however, did not sit well with the fans on social media.

Users on X would attack Cashman for this. Many admitted that the Yankees were infact running the same team and called out their GM. One user wrote, “He’s delusional” while making their feelings known regarding him.
Check out that and some other reactions from X below:
He’s delusional

There’s No true leadoff hitter on this team and everyone knows G. Stanton cannot be counted on or trusted to play 100 games a season. If George were still around this franchise wouldn’t be in this championship drought!

We are not beating the Blue Jays.

How can you disagree with this being the same team running back, when it's literally the same team running it back. You likely even lost talent

The Dodgers won the World Series and added a number of quality roster players. That’s the competiton. Sell the team if you can’t hang

The same team that got dog walked by Toronto right?

That would infer they are not championship caliber since they got embarrassed in the division series.
Dodgers won b2b World Series and paid 80 mil a year for 2 guys in Diaz & Tucker. We get embarrassed vs Toronto and our only moves were weathers & bringing Bellinger back. Like how stupid is this guy

According to the New York Post, the Yankees have stayed in touch with Paul Goldschmidt as a right-handed bat. The former National League MVP batted with a .274 average last season with the Yankees while hitting 10 home runs and 74 RBIs. Apart from that, the team is interested in adding some pitchers and a right-handed outfield bat.
Brian Cashman claims Yankees are capable of doing great things in the 2026 season
Last year, the New York Yankees suffered an American League Division Series (ALDS) exit against their division rivals, the Toronto Blue Jays. Despite this, Brian Cashman is confident that his team is capable of doing great things in the 2026 season.

During the 2025 season, the Yankees did suffer some bumps on the road. At the end, they missed out on the division title as the Blue Jays had a better head to head record against them.
After overcoming the Boston Red Sox in the Wild Card Series, they faced the Blue Jays in the ALDS. Like the regular season, the Canadian side dominated the Bronx Bombers and eliminated them from the postseason by winning the best-of-five series 3-1.
In this series, the Blue Jays had 50 hits compared to the Yankees’ 34. They outscored the New York side 34-19 and finished the year going 11-6 against them.
The Blue Jays then went on to the World Series. They suffered the ultimate heartbreak in Game 7 as the Los Angeles Dodgers came back from 3-0 down in the game to win 5-4 in extra innings.
The Yankees, who lost in the 2024 World Series against the Dodgers, could have been the one facing them again had they beaten the Blue Jays. While speaking on the Zoom call, Cashman expressed that one series does not define their capabilities.
One series, make or break, is not gonna define what we think our capabilities are. In postseason, you’ve got to bring your best baseball every series and if you don’t, you’re going home. It doesn’t mean we weren’t capable of great things. We just didn’t get the job done in that time frame against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Yankees’ last World Series triumph came in 2009. Their wait for another championship has now stretched up to 16 years, which is the second-longest World Series drought in their history.
