After another disappointing loss in the playoffs, the New York Yankees are once again expected to be aggressive in the free agency market. On Wednesday, General Manager Brian Cashman expressed that the team is “very interested” in re-signing 2-time All-Star Cody Bellinger.

The former Los Angeles Dodgers star was one of the top names the team acquired last offseason after losing superstar Juan Soto to their crosstown rivals, the New York Mets. Bellinger, who had a career resurgence at the Chicago Cubs, was traded to the Yankees in December 2024 in exchange for a right-handed pitcher Cody Poteet.

The 30-year-old, who had been under the radar of the Yankees for a long time, had an impressive first season in the Bronx. He batted with a .272/.334/.480 slash line and had 29 home runs and 98 RBIs in 152 games.

Bellinger had a $25 million salary guaranteed for the 2026 season. However, the first baseman/outfielder chose to opt out of his deal in favor of the $5 million buyout. With him now being a free agent, several teams are keeping an eye on him.

After missing the GM Meetings in Las Vegas due to some last-minute personal venture, Brian Cashman spoke about his team’s offseason plans. In this, the 58-year-old Yankees executive revealed that they would like to have him back.

I mean, we’re very interested in bringing him back, obviously now that he’s a free agent… Scott Boras (Bellinger’s agent) is out having the conversations; it remains to be seen. We’d be better served if we could retain him.

Following their World Series loss and the departure of Juan Soto, the Yankees bounced back and finished with a 94-68 record despite having some slight hiccups in the middle of the season. With the Toronto Blue Jays owning the tiebreaker over them, they lost the AL East title.

After knocking out their arch-rivals, the Boston Red Sox in the AL Wild Card Series, the Yankees faced off against the Blue Jays in the American League Division Series (ALDS). Just like the 2025 regular season, the Blue Jays dominated the Yankees once again and eliminated them in Game 4.

In the postseason, Bellinger went 6-for-28 and batted with a .214 average in 7 games. He managed to hit just 1 home run and drove in 4 runs for the Yankees.

Cody Bellinger’s agent drops bold comment regarding him

Cody Bellinger had another fantastic season in the 2025 campaign. The former National League MVP showcased both his offensive and defensive capabilities as he became a key part of the New York Yankees lineup. During the free agency, his agent, Scott Boras, dropped some bold comments regarding him.

While speaking with the reporters regarding his client’s future, Boras labelled Bellinger as a 5-tool player and citied his experience of playing in 3 big markets in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York.

He has a three-year track record of consistency, power, and elite performance. And all of us who watch him play, the accuracy of his throws, his base running, he’s really a five-tool player. We just don’t find many athletes like that there.

Scott Boras told reporters regarding Cody Bellinger

5-tool players are those who excel in hitting for power, hitting for average and have good running, fielding and throwing abilities. Bellinger has excelled in all of these categories and played all 3 outfield positions for the Yankees in the 2025 season.

The big question now is, where will Cody Bellinger play in the 2026 season? Only time will tell where the left-handed hitter will end up.
