The boos inside the MetLife Stadium on Sunday night were an indication that the New York Giants want the Russell Wilson experiment to end and see rookie Jaxson Dart in action. Brian Daboll refrained from giving a straight answer when asked who he would pick to start in week 4.
Dart became the Big Apple’s eye candy after performing admirably in the preseason. Despite that, Daboll stuck with veteran Wilson as his starter in week one against the Washington Commanders.
Daboll returned home after scoring just six points in offense and a sixteen-point defeat. The Cowboys’ fixture in the following week ended in a defeat. However, Wilson threw for 450 yards and 3 touchdowns to force overtime to decide the outcome.
Wilson led the league in passing yards, and the fans backed him to deliver against fellow strugglers, the Kansas City Chiefs. The 36-year-old finished with a 47.78 quarterback rating, 2 interceptions, and 160 passing yards.
Cameras caught Dart revising the plays written on his armband. He ran onto the field and took his place under center for just a couple of plays. However, the stadium buzzed the entire time Dart was on the field. When the final whistle was blown, cheers mixed with boos reverberated as a form of protest for another 9-point game. It also meant they wanted a change.
In the post-game press conference, the media asked Daboll whether he would switch quarterbacks for the Los Angeles Chargers game.
Yeah, I’m not saying who’s starting or who’s not starting. I’m just saying we’re evaluating everything right now. We’re going through the tape from [Week 3], and we’re evaluating every position right now.

Daboll’s statement should have an asterisk above it. Jordan Raanan rightfully pointed out that Daboll made a similar comment right before benching Daniel Jones in 2024. That doesn’t mean Wilson will also experience the same fate, but anything is possible.

Daboll turned to Wilson after failing to woo Aaron Rodgers in the offseason. Jameis Winston became his second veteran signing before drafting Dart in the first round in April.

The Giants planned to let Dart sit and learn behind the two experienced campaigners before taking over at a later date. At 0-3, that plan appears to have run its course, according to ESPN’s Peter Schrager.
After listening to Daboll’s press conference, Schrager pointed out that if the Giants head coach wanted Wilson to start in the Chargers game, then he would have mentioned the Pro Bowler’s name without any hesitation. But he did not. He said:
The truth of the matter is, when Jackson Dart came in the building last night and came into the game, it was electric. When Russell Wilson was in there, you heard the boo birds. How can the ownership withstand that from pressuring the coach and the general manager to make a change?
Schrager brought up a cool insight by Cris Collinsworth, who announced the Giants-Chiefs game. Collinsworth called Dart “scout team Mahomes” and said he could “do all the throws that Mahomes makes.” He added:
You don’t talk that way about your rookie quarterback if there’s no plan to actually see him. The schedule’s brutal. We know that there’s never going to be a good time. I would not be shocked if he’s under center Sunday against the charge.

Daboll is among the few coaches on the brink of losing their jobs, barring a miracle turnaround. Perhaps it’s time to hand Dart the steering wheel.
