Brian Daboll wanted to move on from Daniel Jones after another underwhelming season, but general manager Joe Schoen had other plans.

A new Hard Knocks footage disclosed Brian Daboll’s reaction when general manager John Schoen told him and the New York Giants owner John Mara about their plans of not drafting a new quarterback. Instead of bringing in a new face, they would continue with Daniel Jones.
As the Giants continue their training camp with Jones as their leading quarterback, things would be very different if Schoen had listened to his son. Yet he went with his gut to supply quality players around Jones and give him another opportunity to make amends.
On the recent episode of HBO’s Hard Knocks, Schoen pitched his idea to head coach Daboll and Mara. He explained the benefits of keeping Jones as their starter, which the Giants head coach did not appear to like very much. His body language did not give off the vibe of being thrilled by Schoen’s plan.

Daboll wanted to sign LSU quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels and was even ready to trade up in the draft. Daniels eventually ended up at divisional rivals the Washington Commanders, and the Giants adhered to Schoen’s plan to add more players around Jones, taking LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers.
Daniel Jones remained a hit and a miss at Giants training camp
The Giants completed their 6th day of training, with Nabers receiving much praise for his quick feet and slick-catching skills. It’s clear Nabers possesses the tools to succeed in the NFL, but for that to happen, he requires a quarterback with impeccable accuracy.
Jones’ biggest drawback is his tendency of underthrowing his passes by a mile. It was on full display in the first few days of practice. Daboll is among the few on the hot seat of losing their jobs, and according to New York Daily News’ Pat Leonard, he wasn’t happy with Tuesday’s (July 30) padded practice.
Brian Daboll not pleased out here and vocalizing it. Very poor showing so far today by the first team offense. Jordan Riley just got Daniel Jones’ hand on a throw that Brian Burns should have a INT’d but dropped #Giants

The usual spunk was missing from the offense. Brian Burns almost intercepted Jones a couple of times after the Duke graduate underthrew passes to Jordon Riley. While it may only be practice camp, coaches expect players to give their 100%.

Regardless of the screwups, Daboll put his faith in Daniel Jones to finally prove that he deserved the $40 million a year salary. He missed a chunk of the 2023 season after tearing his ACL. Jones used the offseason for rehab and even gained a lot of muscle to take a hit.
However, there are speculations that he may yet still lose his starter job depending on his performance in the first few weeks. If the Giants got off to a bad start, then perhaps Daboll would hand off the QB job to Drew Lock or maybe even Tommy DeVito.
