Brian Rolapp Reveals Focusing on 6 Themes to Improve Status of PGA Tour
Brian Rolapp, the new PGA Tour CEO, revealed 6 themes they were focusing on, which could improve the status of the circuit and the sport.

Ahead of the 52nd edition of The Players Championship, PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp made some huge announcements. The new top boss of the tour revealed the 6 themes they were focusing on to improve their future.
Last year, Commissioner Jay Monahan announced that he would be stepping down from his post. A PGA Tour CEO Search Committee consisting of Monahan, Arthur M. Blank, Tiger Woods, Adam Scott, Joe Gorder, and Sam Kennedy would later unanimously elect Rolapp as the new CEO of the Tour.
The former NFL executive would make his first appearance at the Tour Championship in August last week. During that time, Rolapp would announce the new Future Competition Committee.
This group, consisting of 9 members, has been headed by Tiger Woods. The 15-time major champion has been serving as the chairman of this committee and working behind the scenes to improve the game of golf.
On Wednesday before The Players Championship, Rolapp would release an open letter directed to the fans regarding this committee. In this letter, 6 major themes were announced.

The first big theme is the structure of the season. As per Rolapp, the committee is working to have a schedule starting from late January and running till early September.
At the moment, the regular season of the PGA Tour comes to an end in August with the Tour Championship. The events after that come under the PGA Tour Fall schedule.
The main part of the new season would include around 21 to 26 events, including the 4 major championships, The Players Championship, the postseason and Ryder Cup/Presidents Cup.
The tour will also look to double the signature events. At the moment, the circuit has 8 signature events. Rolapp and company are looking to make it 16 signature events.
The second big theme is consistent events. The tour will target a big, consistent field of 120 players with a cut. They are also looking to start the season with a bang and have a marquee event on the West Coast to kick off the campaign.
The 4th big change would be bringing the tour events to the big market. According to Rolapp, the PGA Tour only plays in 4 of the 10 largest markets. They now want to bring the tour to cities like New York, Chicago, Boston etc.

Part 4: Looking closely at where the Tour plays. Mentions the Tour plays in only four of the 10 largest markets. Evaluating New York, Chicago, D.C., San Francisco, Boston and other places
Apart from these, the tour is looking to implement a promotion and relegation system. The implementation of a merit-based system could see players having the chance to work their way through the signature events.

As for the final theme, Rolapp and the others are looking to bring some drama to the postseason. The tour boss expressed the idea of implementing match-play format, either at the Tour Championship or across the postseason as a whole.

These themes have not been finalized yet, as per Rolapp. The 53-year-old later informed that they will continue to work on this and provide more updates when they are ready.
Rory McIlroy extends support to Brian Rolapp following PGA Tour CEO’s big press conference
The PGA Tour are planning some big changes regarding their future. Following the massive press conference of Brian Rolapp, 5-time major champion Rory McIlroy extended his support to him and claimed that the tour was going in the right direction.

McIlroy, who is the defending champion at The Players Championship this week, would speak to the reporters on Wednesday. Last week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, he withdrew from the event after 36 holes following some pain in his back.
In his conversation with the reporters, the World No.2 offered his insights regarding Rolapp’s announcement and claimed that he spoke with him for an hour.
I think it’s all — yeah, it’s all pretty positive. I think he’s got into this job and realized how difficult it is to turn this big ship around, and there’s a lot of cooks in the kitchen and a lot of opinions. … it’s obviously a really good direction of where the tour should be going, I think.

As for his playing status, the Northern Irish golfer expressed that it was still a game-time decision due to the back issue. He is currently scheduled to tee off alongside Xander Schauffele and Hideki Matsuyama. He has played in this event every year since 2012.
Only time will now tell whether he will play on Thursday and how the themes detailed by Rolapp would work out for the PGA Tour in the future.
