In 2024, the Dallas Cowboys sustained their first playoff miss since 2020 after managing just seven wins. The Cowboys, impacted by poor performance and management in 2024, are headed into the 2025 season with a new management team under Brian Schottenheimer.
Schottenheimer, who’s donning the head coach position for the first time, has the club leaning into their legacy to revitalize the club. It’s not just a nostalgic gesture, but a calculated move that strayed away from the normal drills and playbook techniques.
The central theme of Schottenheimer’s new approach is building the right kind of culture to cultivate the winning mindset. How better to cultivate it other than bringing the ones who won it all in the same colors.
There’s such great tradition and history here with the Cowboys, and you talk about not just the Super Bowl trophies, but some of the great players. We wanted them to kind of see our energy and our juice, the way we like to operate. They paved the way for the guys that sit in those chairs today.

The offseason training camp featured a full-on reunion of former Cowboys legends. In what was termed as “Legends Day,” the Cowboys welcomed former legends like Bradie James and Joe Looney. James and Looney engaged the team through sit-ins and competitions, bringing their zeal and mentorship to the table.
The moment that perhaps captured it best? Joe Looney, a former Cowboys center who retired in 2020, lined up at the free throw line in a mock basketball contest. With just seconds on the clock and a chance to clinch victory for the offense, Looney sank the shot. The room erupted.
The event saw the arrival of nearly 25 alumni from various eras of Cowboys’ history including Randy White, Bob Lilly, and Michael Irvin. These players sat in position meetings, observed drills, and in many cases, offered direct advice to current players, bridging decades of experience with today’s ambitions.
The event impressed the players who responded that they felt energized and excited to meet legends of the game.
I liked the way [Randy White] emphasized the confidence that you need to have. What’s the word? Just supreme confidence in yourself and your teammates. If you’re trying to do something great out there on the field, you have to believe it first.

Stephen Jones, son of Jerry Jones and executive vice president, revealed that there shall be similar events in the future. He noted that there were several names like Troy Aikman, who hated to miss the event and would love to be a part of the same.
Brian Schottenheimer unfazed by the longstanding championship drought
Since lifting their last Lombardi trophy in 1995, the Dallas Cowboys have failed to nudge past the divisional round. They currently hold the longest active NFC championship appearance drought after Washington Commanders reached the conference final last year.

The new coach expressed that he doesn’t feel that the 29-year championship drought is a burdensome to the players. He admitted that the celebrated past is a sign of what they have achieved and what the current roster strive to achieve.
I don’t think so. Not when the head coach sits up here and talks about the ultimate goal is to win a world championship. I think it’s to be celebrated. You’ve got an incredible organization, incredible team, but the history speaks to what we’re about. So, I think some people might view it as being burdensome. I don’t. I think it’s awesome.

That forward-looking mindset is also reflected in the Cowboys’ current preparations. The Cowboys have added a new WR in George Pickens and quarterback Dak Prescott is set to start after his season-ending injury last year. The team will kick off their preseason campaign on August 10 against the Los Angeles Rams, wrapping up two weeks later ahead of the regular season start in September.
