Despite taking charge of a football team for the first time in his NFL career, Brian Schottenheimer proved on Wednesday that he prefers a no-nonsense approach to handling unruly players. Some took it lightly, and the entire team paid the price.
A new practice day at Oxnard, California, began with the usual team and individual drills until the first fight broke out. According to Cowboys insider Clarence Hill Jr., Schottenheimer warned the players about the consequences of a repeat offense.
He wasn’t kidding. Hill Jr. and ESPN’s Todd Archer reported that Schottenheimer kicked out offensive tackle Ajani Cornelius for throwing a punch at one of his teammates.

Even though Dak Prescott, Jaydon Blue, CeeDee Lamb, and Kaiir Elam showed off their skills, the atmosphere at the camp turned volatile.

A third fight broke out in the red zone between players whose names remain under wraps. Schottenheimer immediately stopped the practice to gather all the players in a large circle and shouted, “You want to fight? Let’s fu*** fight. Get your a** on the sidelines.”
Schottenheimer made everyone run from one end of the field to the other, including some of the coaches.

After the practice, reporters asked CeeDee Lamb to explain the reason behind the punishment.
It’s been a while, but I feel like that was really necessary. I honestly like what he’s doing because we need discipline. We need to be able to go through that line.
CeeDee Lamb said (ht/Associated Press)
Accountability and discipline are important for a player’s growth. Tempers will flare on occasion, but the players themselves need to draw a line when that happens.
Schottenheimer wants to play aggressive football on both offense and defense after the Cowboys’ disastrous 7-10 campaign in 2024.
At the end of the day, the best thing you can do for any offensive line, any team’s offense, when you’re playing elite defensive linemen is pound the frickin’ football man just frickin’ try to shove that ball up their as* and that’s what we are gonna try to do. Be physical.

The Cowboys fans had their heart in their mouth a day earlier. Young offensive tackle Tyler Guyton almost went home with a broken ACL until the doctors clarified he would be back within three to four weeks.

Nate Thomas took first-team snaps in place of Guyton on Wednesday and looked relatively comfortable in his new role.

[Coach Schottenheimer] told me that ‘you need to be ready’ and I took that in stride and make sure I just go about everyday just knowing that ‘hey I need to tune in’ because if I am a starter… you never know when your number’s called in.

The Cowboys took Thomas in the seventh round last year. He spent the rookie season on injured reserve due to issues with his knee.
Brian Schottenheimer must rule with an iron fist to get the best out of the Cowboys players
Player fights during camp are not uncommon. They can either break the bond among the players or help them come closer even more.

Every coach wants the best for his team, and Schottenheimer is no exception. He must get the Cowboys to work together as a group; otherwise, his vision of playing aggressive football will only remain a dream.
The good news is that Dak Prescott appears to have shaken off his injury woes. If he can consistently establish a connection with Lamb and the recently signed George Pickens, the Cowboys have the potential to become a formidable team.
