An emotional yet elated Brian Schottenheimer narrated the stat sheet from his first win as an NFL head coach. Schottenheimer’s Dallas Cowboys defeated bitter rivals the New York Giants 40-37.

The win was a long time coming, and he waited patiently for it. On Sunday, the G-Men arrived in Arlington to bag their first win of the season, the same as the Cowboys, who lost to the Philadelphia Eagles.

It went the distance. Overtime was required to decide the outcome. Both teams wasted their first chances to win the game, leading to sudden death.

Russell Wilson blew the Giants’ second try by throwing an interception to Donovan Wilson. Dak Prescott led the Cowboys inside the Giants’ half to set up a 46-yard field goal for the win.

Kicker Brandon Aubrey stepped up and buried the field goal, securing the Cowboys’ first win of the season.

Prescott and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones handed Schottenheimer the game ball to commemorate his first-ever win as head coach of an NFL franchise. Schottenheimer then brought out a piece of paper containing game stats, which he read out loud as a token of appreciation to his players.

A labored win, but a win nonetheless for Brian Schottenheimer and the Dallas Cowboys

The win was more of a relief than a statement from Schottenheimer. He was doubted from the moment Jones announced him as the new head coach. He was not only taking over one of the toughest jobs in football but also replacing a Super Bowl-winning coach.

The Cowboys lost the first game, but they limited the reigning world champions to below 25 points despite the absence of their best defensive player. It was clear that a similar performance against the 0-1 Giants would be enough to get the W.

However, the game ended all square in regular time, and it took Aubrey’s fourth successful field goal try to settle the fixture.

Cool way to win your first game. You know, you’ll remember it forever, but the words that Dak and the players said to me after the game are why it’s so special… I expect the first of many, but I’ll remember this one forever because of the fight in these guys.

Prescott nearly doubled his passing yards from week one against the Giants. He threw 38 completions from 52 tries for 361 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Running backs Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders each scored one touchdown on the ground, while George Pickens logged his first TD as a Cowboy, with KaVontae Turpin getting his first score of the season.

Prescott was among the biggest supporters of Schottenheimer’s appointment, claiming that he was ready for the role of head coach of the Cowboys. The Pro Bowl shot-caller was also among the first to congratulate Schottenheimer after the Giants’ win.

[Brian Schottenheimer] deserved that first win. Tough one to get, fun one to get, very fun one to get, and I know he’ll never forget it. I won’t forget it, I’m sure every guy in that locker room won’t forget this one.

The Cowboys are now 1-1 but could secure a second win against the 0-2 Chicago Bears in week three. In the following week, the Cowboys welcome a once-favorite son, Micah Parsons, to Arlington and his new team, the Green Bay Packers.
