Brian Schottenheimer has emerged as a surprise candidate to fill the vacant head coach position at the Dallas Cowboys. Owner Jerry Jones is an admirer of the 51-year-old’s work as the current offensive coordinator and reportedly favorably views him.

The Cowboys have been slow in their approach to appointing a new head coach after Mike McCarthy left following a five-year stint in Arlington. Jones tried his best to lure former player Deion Sanders, but the Hall of Famer isn’t ready to part ways with his current job managing the Colorado Buffaloes.

The Cowboys interviewed several candidates even though ex-Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman labeled it as a less lucrative job than it used to be back in his playing days. Robert Saleh, Kliff Kingsbury, Aaron Glenn, and Ben Johnson were some of the names on the list.

However, Brian Schottenheimer seems to be leading the race to become the Cowboys’ next head coach. Besides Jones, he also received endorsement from one of the Cowboys’ top players. Cowboys beat writer Clarence Hill Jr. during a recent segment of the DLLS Cowboys show read a message from quarterback Dak Prescott.

I did get a text from a player. Probably no 4. [Dak Prescott’s jersey no], ‘He will be ready for the next step. He has the right personality and brain.

Clarence Hill Jr. read the message.

Receiving the backing of the starting quarterback is a massive development. Whether the message is directly related or not, Schottenheimer landed a second interview with the Cowboys, scheduled for this week. A few days ago, the Chicago Bears hired Ben Johnson after interviewing him twice, so history might repeat itself even though these two are very different organizations.

What is Dak Prescott’s record with Brian Schottenheimer?

Schottenheimer took charge as the Cowboys OC after the Cowboys fired Kellen Moore following the 2022 season. Although McCarthy sometimes took over the offensive play-calling himself, Schottenheimer played a big part in the Cowboys’ 12-5 run in 2023.

That season Prescott led the league in pass completions (410), for 4516 (second most of his career), 36 passing touchdowns (most in the league), and only 9 touchdowns. He finished in the top 4 for the MVP race, which was eventually won by Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson.

Schottenheimer has been around in the game for quite some time. After graduating from college, he was part of the setup at the St. Louis Rams (Los Angeles Rams), Kansas City Chiefs, Syracuse Orange, USC, Washington Redskins (Commanders), San Diego Chargers (Los Angeles Chargers), New York Jets, Georgia Bulldogs, Indianapolis Colts, Seattle Seahawks, Jacksonville Jaguars, and finally Dallas Cowboys. If Jerry takes a fancy then the Cowboys will be his first head coaching job.
