MLB umpire Brian Walsh has come under the spotlight in the last couple of days due to some controversial calls. A day after he was called out for his decisions from behind the plate during the New York Yankees-Houston Astros game, he made another debatable call, which led to fans thrashing him on social media.
On Wednesday, Walsh missed several calls. As per reports, he missed 21 calls, 15 of which went against the Yankees. He was also involved in heated arguments with Devin Williams, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Aaron Boone.
While Williams and Boone were ejected from the game in the 8th inning for arguing with him over some calls, Chisholm Jr. would take to social media to make his feelings known. Just a day after this, Walsh was once again on umpiring duties. This time, he was working as the third base umpire.
The controversial moment came in the 6th inning when the Astros were 4-1 down. Jose Altuve stepped up to the plate with a runner in second and was trying to pull his team back into the contest.
The Astros’ star would end up hitting a soft liner to third base, where Ryan McMahon appeared to catch the ball and then drop it on the transfer. While the Yankees believed it was a fair catch, Walsh ruled it a drop, and McMahon never secured the ball.
Despite discussion with other umpires and slow-motion replays clearly showing McMahon securing the ball, the call from Walsh stood. Boone would run onto the field to get some explanation. The Yankees manager was able to keep his cool and avoided getting ejected for a second game running.

While Carlos Rodon did manage to get the next batter, Carlos Correa, to ground out on a fielder’s choice, the Yankees were unable to turn it into a double play. Ben Rice was unable to field a low throw from Jose Caballero, which allowed the Astros to make it a 4-2 game. Rodon, however, managed to retire the next two hitters and kept control of the game.
Social media reacts to Brian Walsh making another huge call against the Yankees

LITERALLY HOW DOES THIS HUMAN HAVE A JOB
— Paige🐢 (@_BattaGirl) September 5, 2025
This crew as a whole is terrible, for both sides. That was 100% a catch and how replay upheld that is beyond my comprehension of the game. It’s wild
— Cass (@_Cx2_) September 5, 2025
If this wasn’t a catch then why even have review if they’re not going to get it right? That’s on the people reviewing the play also. What’s crazy is that I’ve seen this happen more than it should. Awful!

NBA star Josh Hart would join the fans in taking a swipe at Walsh. He would repost the Umpire Scorecard of Walsh and wrote, “Suspend him @MLB“.

Amid controversial calls from Brian Walsh, the Yankees claim an important series win against the Astros
The New York Yankees began a hectic 12-game showdown against playoff-contending teams in the American League this week. In the first major assignment, they were able to take down the Houston Astros despite some controversial calls from umpire Brian Walsh.

Ryan McMahon gave the Yankees the lead in the 2nd inning with an RBI single to right field. After Yordan Alvarez leveled it up at 1-1 with a solo home run, McMahon followed it up with a solo home run of his own in the 5th inning.
Following an RBI single from Cody Bellinger and a pitch clock violation on bases loaded, the Yankees took a 4-1 lead. The Astros would make it a 4-3 game in the 7th inning. However, they gave up 4 runs, which included a 3-run home run from Trent Grisham in the 8th inning, to take an 8-3 lead.
The hosts pulled another run back and loaded up the bases while being 8-4 down. David Bednar, though, managed to strike out Carlos Correa and Christian Walker to end the game and give the Yankees an important series win.

The Yankees will now face the Toronto Blue Jays, against whom they have struggled this year. The Bronx Bombers have a 3-7 record against the Canadian outfit and are 3 games behind them in the AL East division standings.
