Following the off-season, tennis players have returned to professional tournaments. The Brisbane International will feature both WTA and ATP events. The tournament is a 250 event for the ATP, while for the WTA, it’s 500.
The WTA 500 event has attracted several high-profile players, the likes of World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka, Ons Jabeur, and Paula Badosa among others. Sabalenka, who was the runner-up in Brisbane last year, will be using the opportunity to get ready for the Australian Open where she will be chasing her third consecutive title.
Men’s World No. 7 Novak Djokovic has signed for the event as after a trophy-less season, he wants to get enough match practice before landing in Melbourne to bid for his 25th Grand Slam title. He signed for both singles and doubles.
Home favorite Nick Kyrgios, who last year announced that the Brisbane International would be his first tournament in 18 months, partnered with the 24-time Grand Slam champion for doubles.
The two best youngsters in men’s tennis, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are not playing. In women’s tennis, on the other hand, high-profile names such as World No. 2 Iga Swiatek and World No. 3 Coco Gauff did not sign up.
Swiatek and Gauff are representing Poland and the United States at the United Cup, respectively. Elena Rybakina, who last year won the tournament with a straight-set win over Sabalenka in the final, is also participating in the United Cup.
