British ace claims that new ‘scaled-down’ ATP Cup schedule to be released soon
The ATP Cup was a new event much like the Davis Cup that was introduced by the ATP this year. It features players from various nations playing for their country against each other.
The first edition was warmly received by the community, and enthusiasm is high for the second edition, scheduled to be held in 2021. Now, British ace Dan Evans claims that the schedule for the event will be released in ‘around 10 days’, though also hinting that it will be scaled down from the previous year.
“I’ve heard a few things,” says Dan Evans
The world no. 31, Dan Evans has had a decent 2020 season after making it to the semifinals in multiple events. One of his most recent tournaments was the Vienna Open, where he made it to the semifinals. He suffered an early exit from the ongoing Paris Masters after losing to a spirited Stan Wawrinka in the first round.
The Brit said, “I have heard a few things that it might be fewer teams, it might be a different week, so I’m not sure what’s gonna happen, actually. Obviously, you just hear different things, so the ATP I think are going to let us know within 10 days I think.”
“We’re getting to crunch time now,” says Tennis Australia chief
The plans for the ATP Cup, including other events, have come under speculation after the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Health and safety concerns being voiced by various outlets have hampered many schedules. Moreover, the ATP Cup faces even more uncertainty, due to its matches being played in three cities across Australia.
The Tennis Australia chief, Craig Tiley, hinted at the same in his recent statement. He said to the Australian press, “We’re getting to crunch time now. We need commitments from the governments and the health officers. We need to kind of know in the next two weeks, maybe a month, that this is what can happen: borders are going to open and then we can have a multi-city event. If we cannot have a multi-city event, we’ve got to reconsider everything.”
The ATP Cup features players from countries like Spain, Serbia, Russia, and many others. It has potential to become one of the highlights of the year, including legends like Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
