- Alexandra Eala is climbing the WTA rankings after reaching the fourth round of the Indian Wells Open.
- She has gained recognition for her performances, including a quarter-final run at the Dubai Tennis Championships.
- Eala expressed pride in her progress despite a recent loss, viewing it as a valuable learning experience.
Alexandra Eala has become one of the young sensations who have impressed on the court since the 2025 Miami Open. The 20-year-old is pushing towards the top 20 of the WTA rankings for the first time in her career after reaching the fourth round of the ongoing Indian Wells Open in the California desert.
Eala made her mark at the Dubai Tennis Championships last month, where she reached the quarter-finals before losing to Coco Gauff in straight sets. The loss was a step in the right direction for Eala as she learnt from the defeat heading into the Indian Wells, where she faced the American star for the second time in less than three weeks.
The 20-year-old produced a much better performance, forcing Gauff to make more than six double faults on the court. She remained aggressive until the former World No.2 decided to retire due to an arm injury. The Filipino star had also emerged as one of the most popular players in the women’s circuit.
Each time she appears on the court, supporters are always seen chanting her name in the stands. Also, it was noted that during the Australian Open, clips about her were among the most viewed on the Grand Slam tournament’s YouTube channel. However, she’s still seeking her first title of this season.
Eala, who first rose to fame at the Miami Open last year after beating three Grand Slam champions, has already impressed several former players. Former British No.1 Greg Rusedski showered Eala with praise during the latest episode of his Off Court with Greg Rusedski podcast. He added that the Filipino has already built a huge following in just less than a year on tour:
She’s a good leftie, moves exceptionally well and she competes incredibly well. The movement is there, the firepower is getting better and it’s a gradual build-up in her career. I like the way she thinks tactically. She’s very astute out there and for all the pressure and expectation that are on her shoulders, she’s finding a way to push through. Eala is great for the women’s tour.
Eala defeated Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open last year. Before that, she defeated Madison Keys and Jelena Ostapenko. She hopes to earn another great run at the WTA 1000 tournament this month. She has already earned one top-five win this year after Gauff retired from their third-round match.
Alex Eala opens up after crashing out of the Indian Wells Open
Alexandra Eala’s run at the Indian Wells Open came to an end on Tuesday (March 10) after she crumbled to Linda Noskova in the round of 16. The Philippine star had defeated Dayana Yastremska in the second round before Coco Gauff retired in the third round. She collapsed to Noskova 2-6, 0-6, in just an hour on the court.

The Filipino is now winless in 11 matches against Czech Republic players on the WTA Tour. During her press conference, she noted that she’s proud of her performance in the California desert and of reaching the fourth round. She added that the loss was a learning experience for her:
I’m really happy about that. It’s still something I’m really proud of. I wish it could end on different circumstances, but it is what it is, and, and there will be a next time for sure. I think my experiences here and my matches here have really meant a lot for me. It’s a learning experience for me… I wouldn’t consider today’s match a positive experience for me, but down the line, I believe it will have a positive impact on my progression as a player.
Eala will now head to the Miami Open with plenty at stake for her after making a surprise semi-final appearance last year. She will defend 300 ranking points at the WTA 1000 tournament, which is more than any event on the calendar.
