One of the reasons why the WNBA is often branded as an ‘activist’ league, both by its players and by observers, is how many lesbian women play in it. The league was built up and held up by lesbian superstars for most of its existence. Even today, players like Brittney Griner, Breanna Stewart and Alyssa Thomas, among others, make up the bulwark of the legends who prefer to date their fellow women.
Brittney Griner is the WNBA’s equivalent of Shaquille O’Neal and Wilt Chamberlain. She holds the record, by far, for most dunks by a woman. With 27 in-game dunks (20 of them coming in real games), she leads the players in second place by a whopping 25 dunks. Her 6’9″ frame, mobility, wingspan and instincts have made her the best rim protector as well as the best rim runner that the women’s game has ever seen.
She also has a really smooth and neat jumpshot that is essentially unblockable for her opponents, most of whom she towers over at the center position. The 34-year-old big has been a menace to her opponents throughout her high school, college and pro career on both ends of the floor. Due to her dominance, Brittney Griner has been an integral part of the Team USA national women’s basketball program for over 12 years now.
Griner was recently interviewed by former NFL MVP Cam Newton. Cam Newton, who has recently been in the news for not rating Jalen Hurts, had a really flowy and engaging interview with the former WNBA MVP and champion. One of the things he asked Griner about was her se**al orientation and whether she had ever dated a man before, to which the 34-year-old replied in the negative. She also revealed when she found out her own preferences:
I had a crush on my kindergarten teacher, Ms Wagner. I ain’t gonna lie to you. When we played ‘house’, I never wanted to be the female. I always wanted to be the guy. I always wanted to be the ‘go to work’, provide, take care of home, protect. Like, I’ve always admired that role. That probably goes back to my pops, he did it so well. He worked his butt off. He provided for us, we always felt protected by him. He wasn’t gonna let nobody disrespect my mom.

Brittney Griner has a chance to make noise in the playoffs once again
Brittney Griner has slowly, but surely, returned close to the form that she displayed in the nine seasons before she was held captive in Russia by the Vladimir Putin government. After down years in 2023 and 2024, when she was still recovering from the mental impact of her captivity, she moved to the Atlanta Dream from the Phoenix Mercury.

The move has clearly worked wonders with Griner as she seems to have returned to her best on both ends of the floor. Her jump shot is almost as lethal as it used to be during her MVP days. Griner is also anchoring a Dream defense that is ranked fourth in the league so far. In addition to her play, the likes of Allisha Gray have also stepped up big-time for the team.
The Dream are currently second in the Eastern Conference and fourth in the league overall. They look likely to hold on to their playoff positioning and have a chance to dislodge last year’s finalists Minnesota Lynx and New York Liberty based on the strength of their performance this year.
