Patrick Mahomes and his Kansas City Chiefs could not finish the 2024 season the way they had hoped. Now they head into the offseason with a focus on resting their tired bodies. One of the ways to unwind is to take a vacation. For the superstar QB, it meant visiting Texas Tech events.
The 29-year-old is a fanatic when it comes to his alma mater. He tries to attend most of their sporting events. But in the NFL offseason, the only sport he can watch live is when their basketball team plays. He has often tried to help them with promotions to draw recruits.
This season, the Red Raiders men’s basketball team have had a decent season where they have won against decent teams. However, their cross-state rivals, the Houston Cougars, have had a much better year.
The last time Texas Tech played against them at their home, it went down to the wire. The Cougars won by one point in overtime. This time, he wouldn’t miss it and was pictured sitting front row with wife Brittany Mahomes. ESPN was broadcasting the game and focused on the NFL power couple a few times.
However, they committed a major gaffe when they tried to show the superstar quarterback in between a play. Mahomes’ Texas Tech had just scored to bring the deficit down to three points. After Houston inbounded the ball, the cameras panned to Mahomes.

Bizarrely, ESPN commentators did not see the ensuing play. Instead, they figured something happened by judging the Chiefs QB’s reaction. Cameras then panned back, but by then, the officials blew the whistle, and those watching at home did not understand what transpired.
Patrick Mahomes celebrates with Texas student
That bizarre gaffe was reminiscent of how fans felt when cameras constantly picked up Taylor Swift at Kansas City Chiefs games. It even brought out some scathing remarks from others in the league. But thankfully in this case, Patrick Mahomes usually celebrates with his alma mater’s fans.

This game was no different. During a break in the first half, a fan was tasked with punting a fluorescent golf ball across the length of the basketball court. The ball had to go into a small hole at the opposite end of the court.
It seemed to take ages as the golf ball slowly made its way across the length of the court. But as it neared, the crowd started to cheer loudly. Then at the end, the ball went in, sending the crowd into a rapturous roar.
The fan then turns and runs towards where the three-time Super Bowl MVP was sitting. The two meet up near mid court, but their meeting was with a midair celebratory bump. Both of them jumped high enough to crash into each other to celebrate the moment.
Commentators suggested that the Kansas City Chiefs might have been nervous when their superstar QB jumped off his feet like that. But then, it is the offseason and after all the Super Bowls he has won for them, they might not want to give him a call to shut down such celebrations with his alma mater.
