Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers’ incredible journey ended in an ugly manner at Lumen Field, home of the Seattle Seahawks. The Niners let in 41 points and scored just 6 in return as they crashed out of the NFC divisional game.

Those who missed the game might criticize Purdy and Kyle Shanahan for such an abysmal performance, but the outcome has been a long time coming. It’s impressive to win enough games to even be in this position in the first place. The Niners gathered injuries like Dragon Ball on Sunday. It was bound to blow up eventually.

The offense missed All-Pro talents George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk, Dominick Puni, and a few others. The defense played nearly half of the year without Fred Warner and Nick Bosa. Purdy ended up playing just nine regular-season games because of shoulder and toe issues.

Despite the absences, the Niners finished 12-5 and were the sixth seed. Purdy went 7-2 and contributed 23 touchdowns and 10 picks.

The Pro Bowl signal caller displayed his clutch genes against the defending Super Bowl champions in the wild card. He conceded two INTs, but at the same time, scored two touchdowns and nearly added a third to ignite hope amidst the 49ers fans. That lasted for a week.

In the past, Purdy had a perfect 4-0 record against the Seahawks in Seattle, yet pundits still saw the Niners as heavy underdogs. There was reason to do so. The Seahawks boasted the best scoring defense (conceded 17.2 PPG), the third-ranked rushing defense (91.9 yards per game), and the best third-down defense (allowed just 32.1% conversion during the 2025 season).

That deadly Seahawks defense showed up on Saturday. Purdy was restricted to 15 completions from 27 pass attempts for 140 yards, lost a fumble, and threw an interception. As the final whistle blew, cameras caught the 26-year-old being comforted by the Niners’ assistant head coach of defense, Gus Bradley.

Brock Purdy shares his honest opinion about the 49ers’ Divisional Round defeat against the Seahawks

To highlight the Seahawks’ dominance, Purdy was sacked and pressured 16 times, turned the ball over once, and ended with a passer rating of just 54.6. The makeshift offensive line barely kept its sanity through the wave of blitzes from DeMarcus Lawrence (forced two fumbles), Ernest Jones (picked off Purdy and forced a fumble from a Niners player), and Leonard Williams (one sack).

Purdy had nowhere to go besides running around in the pocket. Purdy said post-game:

They’re [Seattle] the kind of defense that doesn’t give up any big shot plays. When you have one-on-ones, you have to capitalize, because they’re going to play soft zone and make you reach. All of us, including myself, we’ve got to understand that we’re going against these guys and realize how important it is to stay on the field.

When asked if the current 49ers roster is strong enough to win the Super Bowl next season, Purdy didn’t hesitate to say it is. He added:

I really do believe that we have the right guys… Obviously didn’t end the way we wanted it to, but I really do think that with some guys getting healthy and what we stand for and how we always bounce back.

Honestly, the Seahawks won the game on the very first play when Rashid Shaheed scored a 95-yard kickoff return touchdown. The Seahawks didn’t look back. Sam Darnold, a former Niner, got the start despite practice leading up to the game due to an oblique injury.

Mike Macdonald played the game to Darnold’s strengths and minimized his errors. Instead of forcing him to throw the ball deep, the Seahawks ran the ball more. Darnold made just 17 throws, completing 12 for 124 yards and one score.

It reflected on the final numbers of the receivers. Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who had 1700+ yards in the regular season, caught just 3 passes for 19 yards but did score a touchdown. That being said, the standout performer of the night was running back Kenneth Walker III, who scored three touchdowns and piled up 116 yards on 19 carries. The result ensured the Seahawks’ first NFC Championship appearance since they won the Super Bowl in the 2014 season.
