The San Francisco 49ers came into the 2024 season as the NFC champions waiting to quench their thirst for a Super Bowl after a heartbreaking loss last year. The season, ravaged by injuries to key players, drifted away from their vision as they finished fourth in the NFC West. The Niners won just six games while losing eleven battles including five of the six divisional games.
In the past three years, the San Francisco 49ers had built the team around the likes of Brock Purdy, who broke out in an explosive fashion. After the starter and the backup got injured, Purdy, who was drafted as Mr. Irrelevant, rose to the occasion. He shined in his first start and defeated Tom Brady – becoming the first-ever quarterback to defeat the NFL icon on their debut game start. Fast forward to 2024, Purdy has become Mr. Relevant and wants his contract extension.
Purdy signed to an entry-level contract four years ago has gained immense value in the last four years. He, although the 49ers’ activated his fifth-year option, can look ahead for a contract extension – one which is eagerly anticipated by NFL enthusiasts across the states.
In an interview segment from Purdy’s media availability on Monday penned down by Tim Kawakami of the San Francisco Standard, he addressed the inexperiences of heading into a contract extension situation. The 25-year-old added that he believes he’s the person San Francisco 49ers needs as they look forward to retune themselves from the horrendous 2024 mojo.
The San Francisco management wouldn’t want to start a focus-oriented year with a Brandon Aiyuk situation. Last year, the Niners were badly affected when Aiyuk held on to his stalemate before his contract extension. A similar sort of hold-in would be detrimental for the Bay Area and Purdy knows it.
San Francisco 49ers locker room stands behind Brock Purdy
The 25-year-old from Arizona has all the support from his teammates ahead of this crucial crossroads in his career. The locker room heaped praise on the player for his abilities and past performances.
Christian McCaffrey, who has been key to Brock Purdy’s success as a quarterback, acknowledged that he thought Purdy was great despite the challenges in 2024. McCaffrey admitted that Purdy has maintained work ethic and loyalty in hardships.
The San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch will host their annual year-rounding up media conferences later this week. Although, what comes of Brock Purdy won’t be revealed by then, it is expected that a decision might arrive in couple of months maximum.
