It’s rare for a last pick to not only earn a starting spot but also lead a team to the playoffs and the Super Bowl. Yet, when it happens—on an ordinary weekday, under the bright lights—someone steps onto the field and delivers a performance that leaves a lasting mark. For Brock Purdy, that mark was so undeniable that it may have even played a role in his contract negotiations.

In a recent episode of the Built 4 More podcast, Brock Purdy opened up on his footballing journey so far. He was passed over several times in the 2022 NFL Draft before the Niners chose him as the last pick. However, it was not happening for the first time.

Purdy admitted that he has been treated unfairly by life, being overlooked in all situations. He confessed that his skills have been questioned several times, whether he was good enough. ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ also reflected on his mantra, that is, proving himself despite being underestimated.

My whole story has been just being overlooked, not good enough… high school, it was the case… But I got recruited very late. And then all of a sudden I barely get an offer at the end, and I go to Iowa State. And then I was the third-string guy going into that—overlooked… then I got drafted last. So, all these people tell me that you’re not going to be good enough, but deep down inside, this whole time, I’m like, just wait until I get an opportunity to compete.

Purdy’s admission come at a time when he’s up for a contract extension for the first time in his career. The young QB, who led the Niners to the playoffs in his first two years, crashed out this season in the absence of key players like Christian McCaffrey, among others. The drop in his abilities has once again made him the underdog in the contract negotiations.

In the initial days, Purdy was expected to hit a major jackpot with an AAV nearly equal to the current supremo in cash, Dak Prescott. However, as it stands, there are major speculations that the player might be traded away for Aaron Rodgers.

Brock Purdy loves being a quarterback and leading his team to wins

In his three NFL seasons, Brock Purdy has set a new standard for draft expectations. Jalen Hurts, a second-rounder winning the Super Bowl before an elite set of QBs like Joe Burrow, has amplified Purdy’s messaging.

The underrated and unseen gems could rise to the occasion more than once. Each year, Purdy has tried to improve his skills and lead better. As he faces free agency and uncertainties, Purdy admitted that he loves to bring together a group and accomplish their deliverables.

It’s like, how can we take this group of guys every year, who don’t know each other, and you’ve got to find a way to love each other, and then go accomplish the thing? And so, being a quarterback and doing that is, to me, what it’s all about. I love that.

The strongly Catholic quarterback particularly spoke highly of Ricky Pearsell, who joined the Niners last year. The young player initially didn’t play owing to the gunshot injury he sustained during the preseason.

For me, in the heat of the moment, I need a guy I can trust, and this guy wants to get on the same page with me. So after practice, he’s running routes, I’m throwing to him. And then in the game, boom, we’re hitting on third down and converting. That’s what it takes, time and time again.

The Iowa product has increasingly drawn quite a lot of attention to position himself in line of wanting the role. The anecdotes from the Built 4 more podcast are an example of the same.
