Brock Purdy can finally say that he is among the elite quarterbacks in the NFL after signing a five-year, $265 million extension with the San Francisco 49ers. Purdy went from being the lowest-earning starting quarterback in the league to securing a place among the highest-paid.
Purdy was in the final year of his rookie contract. Spotrac revealed the Niners earlier owed him $5.346 million as his base salary.

The NFC franchise began negotiating with Purdy’s agent right after the Super Bowl in February. In the wee hours of Friday, May 16, 2025, the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero revealed on X that the Niners agreed on a five-year deal with Purdy.
Fans mock the 49ers for overpaying Brock Purdy
Purdy’s deal includes $181 million in guaranteed money. He will earn $161 million from that in the first three years of his contract, which will end in 2030.

It’s a massive occasion for 49ers fans who finally secured a long-term solution to their quarterback spot. However, NFL fans as a whole don’t view the extension on a positive note. They believe the Niners overpaid Brock Purdy.
This will go down in history as the worst contract of all time https://t.co/ABpKjfnBUU

Is 265 Million Going to a System Depend QB?
The 49ers just handed him a 5-year, $265M deal $53M/year.
Here’s three reasons skeptics question this deal.

Brock Purdy isn’t even a top 10 QB in the NFL.. Holy Overpay 🤣 https://t.co/9tkfLApzbA

Giving Brock Purdy 265M is insane. He’s worth 35-40M per year. That’s an overpay for an okay QB who needs weapons aligned right for him to succeed.

49ers owner Jed York knew very early that Purdy was their guy, and he would end up signing a big contract with the Bay Area club. They were already talking about an extension as early as November 2024.
However, York also noted the offseason fire sale put a massive strain on the Niners. He essentially acknowledged that paying one player a big sum of money meant they had to cut costs somewhere else. Jed York told David Lombardi of the San Francisco Standard:
Teams go through different life cycles, and you’re in a life cycle now of still having a really good core of people, but some of those tangential pieces you have to address through the draft or through free agency at a lower expectation or a lower lever so you can pay your quarterback.
While perhaps there’s zero connection, York sold 6% of the 49ers and gained $500 million in return right before Purdy’s extension.
Interesting: Jed York sold 6% of the #49ers franchise yesterday for roughly $500M dollars.

Coincidentally, today he gave $265M ($181M Guaranteed) in a contract extension to Pro Bowl QB Brock Purdy. pic.twitter.com/iTnqP4hiCb
General manager John Lynch focused on the draft and re-signed veteran tight end George Kittle to a new deal to give Purdy some assurance. Brandon Aiyuk and Christian McCaffrey are set to return from their injuries, while Jauan Jennings appears to take over as the wide receiver one, which should be enough to give Purdy weapons to carve out NFL defenses.
Purdy’s extension happened on the back of his first three performances at the pro level. He led the 49ers to consecutive NFC title games and a Super Bowl appearance in the 2023-24 season.
Analyst Warren Sharp reported that, despite the down season in 2024, Purdy still averaged the third-best yards per throw, completed the fourth-most passes (65.9%), and ranked fifth in EPA/attempt.

#4 in success rate
#5 in EPA/att

Purdy, in his three years with the Niners, threw 722 completions for 9518 yards, 64 touchdowns, and 27 interceptions, along with 127 rushes for 480 yards and 8 rushing touchdowns, and boasts a 23-13 win-loss record in the regular season.
A big extension means big responsibility. The Niners drew the easiest NFL schedule this year, according to Warren Sharp. If Purdy doesn’t reach the playoffs, then the numbers will look worse.
