By now, everyone knows the San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Brock Purdy, and the Indiana Pacers star, Tyrese Haliburton, attended Iowa State University. But most, especially those who are not alumni of the Cyclones, must be curious about how the two met.

Purdy talked about it a little bit during his recent appearance on the Rich Eisen Show. Host Rich Eisen asked Purdy if he had spoken with Haliburton recently.

It was more, ‘Congrats on a good season,’ and praying for him after his injury in game seven. And it was tough to watch, but I’m so proud of him.

The 25-year-old shot caller revealed Haliburton always possessed the ‘it’ factor in him, and it was heartbreaking to see him go down with a torn Achilles during the Pacers’ game seven against the OKC Thunder.

To see him do this on the national level… the highest level in the NBA, it was pretty remarkable. His playoff run, the whole season, he had, man, couldn’t be more happy for him.

Purdy added

Eisen loved Haliburton’s performance as well, but being a New York Knicks fan, he would have preferred the Pacers hadn’t gone on the dominating run.

After venting his grief, the veteran NFL contributor asked Purdy to reveal how and when he realized that Haliburton would become the next NBA superstar.

We had a couple of those classes and, like, just hung out with him. He’s a genuine dude, and he had just this charismatic personality in front of all the guys and stuff. I was like, ‘Oh, this guy’s sweet.’ Like, this guy, he’s got something to him.

Unfortunately, the basketball community is set to miss the high-flying Haliburton in the new season. The doctors confirmed that the 25-year-old point guard will miss the entire 2025 season because of his injury.

Brock Purdy received a text from Tyrese Haliburton earlier this year

Purdy was on the TK Show, hosted by 49ers insider Tim Kawakami, after the NFL released the schedule for the 2025 season. Purdy revealed that he received a text from his friend Haliburton after he found out that the Niners would play the Indianapolis Colts.

[Hali] was like, ‘Man, you guys come here, I guess the [Indianapolis] Colts, and I got a suite for you and your family if y’all need it.’ I was like, ‘Man, thank you.’ And this was right after one of the big playoff games. I was like, ‘This guy is hilarious.’

Haliburton has to wait until week 16, which is in December, to watch the 49ers play against the Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Purdy, famously the last pick of the 2022 NFL draft, signed a five-year, $265 million extension with the 49ers. Haliburton? Well, he signed a five-year, $260 million contract with the Pacers.

Since his debut in 2022, Brock Purdy has appeared in 40 games, starting 36, and posted a record of 23-13 for the 49ers. He has thrown 722 completions for 9518 yards, 64 touchdowns, and 27 interceptions, along with 127 rushes for 480 yards and 8 rushing touchdowns.

The Niners kick off the new season by facing divisional rivals, the Seattle Seahawks.
