Selected as the Mr. Irrelevant in the 2022 NFL Draft, Brock Purdy has defied expectations and solidified his role as the San Francisco 49ers’ franchise quarterback. In the three seasons as a starter, Purdy has led the Niners to two postseasons, including a Super Bowl in 2024.
Recently, Purdy and the Niners signed a five-year, $265 million contract extension, reflecting both his performance and the team’s confidence in his long-term potential. The deal includes $181 million in guaranteed money and carries an average annual value of $53 million. With this extension, Purdy becomes one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in professional football.
However, the celebratory tone surrounding the deal was quickly tempered by discussions about California’s aggressive state tax policies. Many fans were surprised to learn how much of that $53 million Purdy will get to take home.
According to tax estimates, Purdy is expected to pay over $28 million annually in federal and state taxes combined. These include $19.567 million in federal income taxes, $7.529 million in California state taxes, $1.254 million in federal payroll taxes, and $1,686 in California State Disability Insurance.

Welcome to California, where the tax man plays defense too. 😅

The impact of state taxes has reignited debate over fairness in contract earnings across NFL teams. As of 2025, eight states, Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Wyoming, don’t levy an income tax. This means that the players playing with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins, Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys, Las Vegas Raiders, and the Tennessee Titans don’t have to shell out a maximum of their contract as tax.
Furthermore, Washington doesn’t tax income but levies capital gains on certain high earners. The Seattle Seahawks players are affected in some way, but very less compared to the Californians anyway.
On the other hand, back in California, the state has what is called a progressive tax structure. Basically, it means that the more one earns, the more tax they pay. No wonder, Purdy started the discussions with $65 million AAV. He’s already in the highest tax bracket.
Despite the steep deductions, Purdy will still earn approximately $24.6 million annually in take-home pay.
Is Brock Purdy no longer underrated?
Coming as the last pick, Brock Purdy had peanuts compared to many starters at that point. However, the new contract has placed him among the top ones in terms of financial wealth. The former Iowa State player ranks above the likes of Matt Stafford, Justin Herbert, and more.

Amid the deal, there has been a lot of conversation about Purdy’s worth. Several analysts and critics pointed out that Purdy was overpaid, stating he is a system quarterback. Nevertheless, ESPN’s Aaron Schatz has come forward in support of the player.
Despite the contract extension, Schatz noted that Purdy remains underrated. In a detailed positional breakdown, Schatz argued that even with his lucrative deal, Purdy is still underappreciated relative to his output.
“Does Purdy’s huge contract extension mean he is no longer underrated? On the contrary, some of the criticism of the extension suggests people don’t understand how much better Purdy has been compared to the other Shanahan quarterbacks in San Francisco,” Schatz wrote in the article published on Friday.
Purdy’s performance in 2024 came amid notable challenges for the 49ers, who finished the season with a 6-9 record. Key offensive players missed time, and team consistency wavered. Still, Purdy posted a 65.9% completion rate, threw for 3,864 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. His 96.1 passer rating showed resilience in a season full of setbacks.
In the Kyle Shanahan era, eight different quarterbacks have started for the Niners, including Purdy. The list included Jimmy Garoppolo, Nick Mullens, and Trey Lance among others. Apart from Garoppolo, who was marred by injuries, none of the other quarterbacks performed favorably under Kyle Shanahan when compared to Purdy.
Over his three NFL seasons, Purdy has logged 40 games and started 36, compiling a 23-13 record. He’s thrown for 9,518 yards, 64 touchdowns, and 27 interceptions, completing 67.5% of his passes with a 104.9 passer rating.
Still, there are significant doubts about Purdy. The 2025 season presents the player to prove that he’s more than a product of the Shanahan system, thanks to the easiest schedule amongst all teams.
