Bronny James selling $50 million worth jerseys makes him valuable to Los Angeles Lakers

After the opening night father-son duo history making game, the hype has faded on LeBron James and Bronny James. Now, the critics are heavily scrutinizing the Los Angeles Lakers rookie for his underwhelming G-League performances. Many have even questioned his ability to play in the NBA.

The debate raging now is whether Bronny James should have continued in college before coming over to the NBA. The debate also has many people questioning if the Los Angeles Lakers had wasted their 55th overall draft pick on a player who needs a lot of development.

Teams do take their chance on raw prospects, but the 20-year-old’s performances suggest he is beyond raw. When this topic reached Gil’s Arena, former player Rashad McCants did not understand how James is valuable to the Lakers. To this, host Gilbert Arenas replied.

You average 10 points a game, you sell no jerseys. He plays no minutes, he sells 500K. Who’s worth more to the owner, you or him? I’m paying you your salary to be on this team. He’s paying me my salary. When you are selling 500,000 jerseys and you are putting people in these seats, cause they just want to see you, you are paying me to pay you.

As the discussion became heated, Arenas added that the Los Angeles Lakers apparently sold 500,000 jerseys once James Jr. joined their ranks. That means at an average price of $100, the Lakers made $50 million in revenue.

That already takes care of the $7.9 million four-year contract they have to pay him in addition to any other expenses. There is also the matter that be it Summer League or the G-League, James Jr. is drawing crowds by the thousands.

Bronny James’s injury keeping him out of games

Bronny James was part of the Los Angeles Lakers bench for five games. Then, he was sent to the South Bay Lakers to continue his development. But part of that decision invited controversy as it was declared that he would only play home games.

The South Bay Lakers have played five games at home, out of which James Jr. played in the opening two. Fans also did not see him on the senior squad bench during their recent home games. There was no clear intimation to the reason for his absence.

But when fans prodded the G-League squad’s social media pages, the Lakers officially listed him as suffering a ‘left heel contusion.’ The site lists him as out but does not clarify if it is for G-League games as well. If he becomes healthy before their next home game on December 6th, he can continue his development.
