Bronny James called out for major flaw

Bronny James recently made his debut at the NBA G-League for the South Bay Lakers. After being drafted with the 55th pick of the NBA draft by the Los Angeles Lakers, James Jr. has been relegated to the G-League to pick up some game time.

However, as he continues to work on his game, former NBA star Gilbert Arenas called out a major flaw in James’ game. Arenas has defended the unfair criticism of James in the past but has never been shy of voicing his opinions.

On the latest episode of the Gils Arena podcast, Arenas and the crew discussed James’ debut in the G-League. During the show, Arenas pointed out some major flaws in James’ game, which have held him back on the offensive end of the floor.

[Bronny’s] game is passive… It’s this awkward thing when he is supposed to shoot it he passes, when he is supposed to pass he shoots.

Gilbert Arenas said on the podcast

Gilbert Arenas pointed out that James has been affected by indecisiveness in his gameplay. Agent Zero went on to explain how the youngster’s lack of aggression on the basketball court causes his game to be ‘passive.’

The 42-year-old especially pointed out an issue with James’ pass-first style of play, where he looks out of sorts when trying to score. Arenas quoted examples of elite pass-first point guards such as Jason Kidd or Steve Nash.

Arenas pointed out how elite guards such as Kidd or Nash used to look to score, but it was their aggression to score which allowed them to dish out passes. For Bronny James to be successful, he would need to play with an aggressive mindset instead of looking to make a play first and then thinking about scoring.

Bronny James disappoints in G-League debut

Much of the conversation surrounding Bronny James recently has stemmed from his debut in the NBA G-League. JJ Redick and the Lakers coaching staff sent their young draft pick to the G-League hoping to get him some developmental reps.

However, James did not have the best outing at his debut with the South Bay Lakers. As Lakers stars Anthony Davis and LeBron James looked on, James Jr. ended the game with just six points in 31 minutes of action.

The 20-year-old shot 2-9 from the field, draining a pull-up jumper for his first bucket. However, the glaring issue with his game seemed to be his lack of confidence, as Gilbert Arenas had pointed out.

Bronny James’ lack of confidence showed on the offensive end, as he recorded five turnovers. He ended the game with a -1 plus-minus in a 14-point win for the South Bay Lakers. He and the South Bay Lakers play their next game on Friday against the Santa Cruz Warriors.
