Over the weekend, Los Angeles Lakers rookie Bronny James made his G-League debut for the South Bay Lakers, where his team secured a 14-point win (110-96) over the Salt Lake City Stars. However, it was a rough outing for James, as he scored only six points on 2-for-10 shooting and committed five turnovers in his 31 minutes on the court.

His stats were shared by various NBA news outlets, which included Legion Hoops on X. However, not everyone was impressed, as former NBA Coach of the Year George Karl expressed skepticism, and commented that James’ numbers did not merit such widespread attention.

Is Legion Hoops trying to create news by showing Bronny is bad, like everyone knew he would be?? This ain’t news.

To his credit, Bronny James contributed in other ways as he grabbed three rebounds, dished four assists, and recorded two steals and a block, compensating somewhat for his inefficient shooting and turnover issues. He also posted a game-high five turnovers and was the only starter for the South Bay with a negative net rating (-1) in the game, a rare blemish in the team’s otherwise solid victory.

While Bronny had a quiet game, undrafted Lakers rookie Quincy Olivari stole the show, as he led the South Bay with an impressive 28 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. Known for his energetic style, Olivari quickly became a fan favorite during the preseason, where he earned himself a two-way contract.

Bronny James embraces the opportunity to develop in G-League with South Bay Lakers

Regardless of the negativity noise, James Jr. expressed his excitement about getting more playing time after moving from the Los Angeles Lakers to their G-League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers. In his debut on Saturday night, he scored his first points just 43 seconds into the game on a 17-foot jumper.

I’ve seen all the buzz and stuff about me going down to the G— I mean to the G, not down. It’s just, it’s an amazing experience, for me to go out and play my game and get some minutes under me. I’m just excited for it.

Bronny James told reporters

Prior to joining the South Bay Lakers, James had averaged under three minutes per game in his five appearances with the Lakers, which totaled just four points and two assists. His time in the G-League now offers him the chance to develop his skills and gain confidence in a more extended role.

Furthermore, with limited opportunities at the NBA level so far, the move to the G-League is seen as an essential part of his growth as a rookie. And Lakers head coach JJ Redick indicated that James will split time between the G-League and NBA as the season progresses.
