Despite being a 55th overall pick, Bronny James was the undisputed star of last year’s Summer League. This season, he is again the primary focus as fans wait to see his development take shape. Along with him, another newcomer in Cooper Flagg was also making a lot of noise.

The latter as the No. 1 overall pick has massive expectations on his shoulders. Many believe he is the generational talent the league has been waiting for. The obvious surprise was how he came into the NBA.

Fans were waiting for James Jr. and Flagg’s first battle. The hype surrounding the Summer League clash sent courtside ticket prices through the roof. It seemed as if the entire basketball world was waiting for these two youngsters to take over.

The game started off with the Los Angeles Lakers sophomore dribbling to his left and shooting a long fadeaway jumper. On the very next Lakers’ possession, he shot a three-pointer over the long outstretched arms of the rookie.

Then it was the Duke sensation’s turn to impress, and he stole the ball and threw down a powerful tomahawk dunk. Again, on the next possession, he could not shake off Dalton Knecht. That, however, did not stop him from shooting a fadeaway.

In the 2nd quarter, Bronny James was guarding Cooper Flagg near the baseline. As the Mavericks star backed his opponent, James Jr. poked the ball out, but was called for a reach-in foul. Fans inside the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas went into a frenzy.

The Lakers guard smiled at the officials in disbelief. Replays indicated that his second reach was mistimed as his hand hit Flagg. On the next inbound play, the rookie did not bother backing down, and hit a long midrange jumper.

Fans love Bronny James vs. Cooper Flagg duel

Basketball fans watching this duel from home were ecstatic that these two young stars made this game a classic. Their duel was much-needed entertainment in a Summer League that usually does not garner much interest.

Fans believe this will set the stage for the next chapter in the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks’ rivalry. Both teams have young studs who want to make their mark, and have proved they are capable of handling the pressure.

Even though the two did not continue their 1st half battles into the 2nd, basketball fans had seen enough to get a fair return for the time they spent in front of their televisions on a Thursday night. Check out examples of those reactions below:

In the 3rd quarter, Bronny James and his Los Angeles Lakers took a 10-point lead. However, the Dallas Mavericks quickly overturned that within a few minutes. This was a close Summer League game and went down to the wire.

Bronny James missed game-winning shot

Towards the end of the game, the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks were neck and neck. In the last minute, Cooper Flagg helped his team obtain the lead after blocking a Lakers’ shot, and then setting up fellow rookie Ryan Nembhard for a three.

The men in purple and gold still had a minute to change the game. However, they could not and the ball was in Bronny James’ hands in the last 8 seconds. He kept dribbling to find an opening, but his teammates could not separate.

He then stepped back, pump-faked and then launched a deep three-pointer. The ball bounced off the back of the rim. Flagg touched it last before the ball went out-of-bounds, but the clock hit 0 before the ball crossed the line.

Both Bronny James and Cooper Flagg struggled with efficiency. If this is a teaser of what they can do if given time to develop, basketball fans might have a new rivalry building which could excite them for years.
