Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has been on a tear to start the 2024 season. Patrick Beverly, James’ former teammate, credits the arrival of the star’s son for the elevated play. However, the rookie suited up for only two occasions this season, much to the fans’ disappointment.
The Lakers rookie recently made his debut in the team’s home opener against the Phoenix Suns. The Lakers’ 110-103 victory against the Suns saw Bronny James and LeBron James suited up together, marking the first father-son duo to play in an NBA game.
The Pat Bev Pod host Beverly thinks moments like this can be a driving motivation for the 39-year-old. He claimed that LeBron’s mindset going into this season is something different.
Bron did a move baseline, Bronny got up and gave him a look, LeBron gave him a look, I say ‘Oh yeah’… the motivation is on Bron to put on in front of his son… don’t send him (Bronny) to the G-league, Yeah Bron needs to see his shorty (Bronny) out there on every bench… and his demeanor, his swag, his attitude… oh my God it’s different.

Looking at James’ recent performances, Beverly’s claim is not as farfetched as it seems. Five games into the season, the Lakers star had already dropped a 30-point triple-double, pouring in 32 points,14 rebounds, and 10 assists against the Sacramento Kings. Various reports from the Lakers organization have also noted a change in James’ demeanor after his son’s arrival.

The Lakers rookie was picked up by the team this past Draft late in the second round. Being the 55th pick, the rookie guard is most likely to divide his time with the team’s G-League affiliates. As reports from ESPN suggest, James Jr. is projected to separate himself from the Lakers after the team’s current road trip ends on November 6.
Bronny James future with the Los Angeles Lakers
The team’s management had already announced Bronny will be joining the South Bay Lakers for the 2024 season. It was a decision much supported by the media and even James himself. Although the move was to aid the rookie’s development, his future with the organization is still cloudy.
Bronny was not a highly touted recruit coming into the NBA Draft, hence his late 55th pick. Bronny is still a developing project with major upsides as a 3-and-D guard but lacks in size and athleticism. Given his major lackings as a first-year player, the Laker’s current timeline does not match his development.

With the team aiming to maximize King James’ remaining prime years, the team is unlikely ready for any real roster rotation for him. Bronny’s play in his upcoming G-League involvement will be a huge deciding factor moving forward. Bronny will still resume a bench role with the Lakers as he splits his play with the South Bay affiliates.
