Despite sacking Drake Maye record times in Week 8 fixture, including a strip-sack, Myles Garrett only had nice things to say about the New England Patriots quarterback. From Garrett’s point of view, the second-year starter is on the path to becoming a “great quarterback.”
Maye’s rise as one of the best young quarterbacks has been nothing short of remarkable. Despite losing two games in the first three fixtures, Maye’s performance caught everyone’s attention. He accumulated 6 touchdowns and averaged 240 passing yards across the three games.
A win against Carolina followed, but Maye’s match-winning performance against Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills forced the football world to take notice of his talents. Even though he did not record any TDs, Maye set up running back TreVeyon Henderson for two scores.
In the ensuing two fixtures, Patriots fans witnessed five more touchdowns and two wins, increasing the season’s record to 5-2. This set up a juicy bout against the Cleveland Browns, spearheaded by arguably the best defensive player in football.
Myles Garrett walked into Foxborough, standing on 107.5 sacks since making his debut in 2017. By sacking Maye in the first quarter, Garrett surpassed Reggie White‘s total sacks record before the age of 30.
Four more sacks followed, but those weren’t enough for the Browns (who conceded an average of 16.6 points in the first seven games) to stop Maye from dropping 422 total yards and 32 points. Maye finished the week eight fixture with 18 completions from 24 attempts for 332 (passing+rushing) yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception.
Garrett was obviously frustrated by the outcome. However, it did not stop him from raving about Drake Maye’s performance.
I think [Drake Maye] is a great human being. I think he is a good quarterback who is soon to be a great quarterback. I like how he’s grown. I know it’s nice to be a part of his journey. Hate to be on this [losing] end of it, but it’s nice to see how he’s leading his team. He’s helped them rebuild into what they are now, so, in a way, I’m proud of him, and I’m happy to see his success.

Drake Maye joins an elite group of quarterbacks following the win over the Browns
Maye was drafted into the New England setup during a transition. He struggled to play his natural game, but there were flashes of brilliance in patches.

The Patriots scrapped the previous regime and appointed ex-player and ex-Titans head coach Mike Vrabel. They also brought back Josh McDaniels as the offensive coordinator, who helped Tom Brady win multiple Super Bowls.
This move has helped Maye take the next step in his growth, and after eight games, he finds himself rubbing shoulders with legendary company. According to NFL research, Drake Maye has joined an elite QB club with 200+ passing yards & 100+ passer rating in 7+ consecutive games within a season at any age: Aaron Rodgers (2011, 2020), Tom Brady (2007), Peyton Manning (2004), and Patrick Mahomes (2018).

In a recent segment of NFL Live, retired NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky compared Maye with 2x Super Bowl champion Ben Roethlisberger.
I think what stands out the most about Drake Maye right now is that he reminds me of a young Ben Roethlisberger. Here’s the thing, so often Maye sheds off that arm tackle, that in-the-pocket shove, and I think you’re realizing when he was coming out of school how important that frame was.
